From the Board Chair
by Marva
Dear friends:
2U is a busy place.
2U is truly a community of ourselves and I am so thankful to all of you
that have assumed responsibility for committee and program activities.
Many thanks to the team that worked with the Board of
Trustees to plan and lead our Listening and Sharing Worship services, which provided a much-needed opportunity
for our congregation to reflect on the complexity of the events of the past few
years, learn other perspectives and begin healing. As David and I say frequently at home, all of
us hold a piece of the truth. I left the
service "Singing in my heart all the
stirrings of compassion."
The Board of Trustees is also in the process of calling
members and friends. We want to hear you are doing, and to discuss any
questions or concerns you may have about our transition.
I also encourage all of you to attend the Town Hall meeting
on Sunday February 28th. This
meeting is the first of two of Town Hall meetings established as a means to
restore the democratic process and full congregational participation in the
life of 2U. The February Town Hall will
be informational and invitational. The
Board will provide information on how the transition has impacted our staff and
finances. We will be announcing a
special pledge drive as well as our annual canvas drive. In addition, we will discuss recent changes
to the Committee of Ministries (COMs) charter as well as information on the
activities of all church committees.
Other topics include staff settlement agreements and the Interim and
Settled Minister Searches. And there
will be ample opportunities for questions and discussion.
I invite all of you to become part of the democratic and
participatory decision-making at 2U by providing your energy and resources as
you see fit.

Lay-Led Services Training
Saturday, March 6, 10:00am
We want to hear your voice! Lay-led services are coming to 2U. This
means members of the congregation will lead our worship, including writing and
delivering sermons. If you're willing to share your voice, we want to help.

Orientation to Second Unitarian Church
Second Unitarian Church would
like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, March 7, noon-2:00 p.m.!! This orientation will be facilitated by
members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share
information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's
own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look
like. Attending an orientation is one
prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U.
So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to
membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about
Unitarian Universalism, please join us!
Snacks will be provided and
childcare will be available upon request.
To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the
big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net. We look forward to seeing you there!

 Group Volunteer Gathering
Join us for our quarterly Group Volunteer Gathering Sunday March 7 at 2nd Unitarian Church. All volunteers and interested folks are welcome! We'll gather from 2:30 - 4:00pm.
We'll hear from youth participants who participate in TNM's homeless youth activism group, have an opportunity to break up into small groups (for brand new folks, a topic discussion for volunteers, and a group for leaders to share resources), spend a minute appreciating all of you and then get the inside scoop on what's going on at TNM.
All of this will be followed by treats! So, grab some folks from your congregation and join us for this exciting afternoon!
Please RSVP to Julie, julie@thenightministry.org or 773-506-6004.

Young Adult Circle Worship
The 2U Young Adult Ministry invites young adult members and friends (between
ages 18 and 35) to join us for circle worship at noon on March 14. Circle
worship is a time for reflection, discussion, and fellowship with fellow
young adults.
The Young Adult Ministry works to create meaningful
connections between young adults at 2U and with the broader church community,
and to explore opportunities to serve both in the church and in
the community around us. Whether you've recently moved to Chicago, or
if you've been here all your life, our ministry recognizes and
supports the joys and challenges of the many new beginnings in the lives
of young adults at 2U. For more information contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

Liturgists Needed for 2010
Would you like to help put on
Sunday services at Second Unitarian -- without a hefty regular time commitment?
Do you enjoy poetry or public speaking? Can you make an announcement that makes
people want to jump up and volunteer? If so, the 2U Religious Services Committee
would love to put you on our list of liturgists. Liturgists are volunteers from
the congregation who co-lead the candle-lighting portion of service, perform the
readings chosen by the minister, and make announcements during the service.
Liturgists should have a clear speaking voice and at least a little passion for
reading aloud and bringing words to life. Volunteers will be called on for 2-4
services a year, and you will need to arrive early for a mic test on your
scheduled Sundays. A short training will be March 14th after service.
Please email the church office at secondunitarian@att.net to sign up. Thank
you!

2U Dinner
Celebrate Spring together! The membership committee invites you to gather
together socially for a "2U Dinner" on Saturday, March 20. Warm people, great

dinner in a member's home, please sign up at the What's Happening table. For
more information, contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

Parenting in Multi-Racial Families
The Parenting in Multi-Racial Families group is coming back. We'll
be arranging a potluck in March to get together, see old faces, meet new
people who would like to join a discussion group focused on Parenting
in Multi-Racial Families and also to decide what schedule and format is
going to work for the most people over the course of the coming year. If interested, please contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

Unemployed or Underemployed?
Join the 2U Employment Group! Come
for support, concrete resources and accountability. We meet on the
4th Monday of every month in the Palmer Room, 9:00 - 11:00. Our next meeting is March 22. For more information contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

UU Quilters
Looking for a fun and productive way to spend a chilly
winter evening? The UU Quilters invite
you to join us and craft for a cause!
We are an
intergenerational group of sewers dedicated to the traditional craft of
quilting and UU principles. Past and current
projects include quilts we have made for babies born into UU congregations,
quilts we have donated to various causes whose missions are aligned with UU
principles, and the occasional ministerial stole.
No experience necessary and all
skill levels are welcomed (even if you have never threaded a needle!). All of our projects are collaborative-from
the planning stages to the actual stitching-and we learn from each other and
experiment with new techniques. Typically,
we work on several projects simultaneously and in various stages of
completion, so there is always something to do.
We invite you to join us for an
evening of friendly faces, good conversation and purposeful crafting. Best of all, it's free! For more information, please contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

UU Women as Agents of Change Women's Leadership Day Third Unitarian Church of Chicago Saturday March 20, 2010
UU Women's Connection proudly presents a program to
celebrate the 200th birthday anniversary of Margaret Fuller. We will honor this feisty and fearless UU
foremother by honoring UU women in our congregations who have similarly stepped
up in difficult times. One singular,
outstanding woman from each congregation will be honored, and she will attend
free of charge. Don't miss an
opportunity to recognize your congregation's Agent of Change. All women from the district congregations may
also register for a modest $15, which includes: celebration, honoring, ritual,
Margaret Fuller Conversation Salons, lunch, entertainment by MOMSthatROCK
(momsthatrock.com), and more. Materials
for submitting an honoree story for recognition on March 20th, individual or
group registration for the event and more about the day are available at www.womenandreligion.org: connections@uuwomensconnection.org.
