Second Unitarian
Church Board of Trustees Covenant during Our
Tenure
A couple of weeks ago, we had
a Board retreat (we didn't go far, we met in the church basement!) to get to
know one another better and to discuss how we can best work together over the
next 6 months. In view of the challenging responsibilities that every Board of
Trustees accepts, we felt it would be helpful for us to agree on some guiding principles
for how we will interact with one another and with the congregation. We discussed
what was important to each of us and wrote out our common principles that we
will use as our roadmap during our time on the Board. To foster communication
and open dialogue, we wanted to share this Board's covenant with the entire
congregation.
We
the current Board of Trustees of Second Unitarian Church covenant to:
1.
Honor diverse
opinions and accept when one or more persons disagree with the majority
2.
Listen for and
work to clarify the value in whatever we or other members of the congregation
want to accomplish
3.
Seek creative
solutions
4.
Remember that we
are fully accountable to the congregation and that we depend on the democratic
process
5.
Ensure
transparency in our work and the work of the congregation
6.
Encourage others
to challenge us
7.
Remember that we
all have a piece of the truth
We hope that this covenant
will be a helpful guide during our service on the Board until the end of this
church year in June 2010. This covenant of course only applies to the current
members of the Board during our tenure as the Board and is not intended to
guide future Boards after our tenure is completed. In the spirit of #6 above,
please let us know if you have any thoughts or concerns about the Board's
covenant.
With
joy and gratitude,
Mark Secretary of your Board of
Trustees

Listening & Sharing Worship
Saturday,
February 13 from 12:00-2:30 and
Sunday,
February 21 from 12:00-2:30 (after the service)
A lot has happened in
the last 3 months, 6 months, year, and several years at 2U. Lots of emotions
ranging from confusion, sadness, pain, frustration and anger to hope, relief and
energy have come up for many people as a result of the events surrounding the
Request for Special Meeting and our previous Minister's resignation. What we
share is a concern and care for the community and all those within it.
Different stories and
different information have been shared in various forums, but we have not had
enough time to air our thoughts and concerns as a community. Before we can move
on to the practical challenges being addressed at the upcoming 2/28 Town Hall
Meeting on democratic process and committees, there will be a time to ask
questions, share perspectives, and lay on the table the impact of recent events
on the community.
Please join us for an
open conversation and healing worship that we hope will lead to community
understanding. The Listening & Sharing worship will be held TWICE for your
scheduling convenience! Clergy and members of the Board will be present. POTLUCK
lunch and snacks are appreciated!

Join us for our quarterly Group Volunteer Gathering Sunday March 7 at 2nd Unitarian Church. All volunteers and interested folks are welcome! We'll gather from 2:30 - 4:00pm.
We'll hear from youth participants who participate in TNM's homeless youth activism group, have an opportunity to break up into small groups (for brand new folks, a topic discussion for volunteers, and a group for leaders to share resources), spend a minute appreciating all of you and then get the inside scoop on what's going on at TNM.
All of this will be followed by treats! So, grab some folks from your congregation and join us for this exciting afternoon!
Please RSVP to Julie, julie@thenightministry.org or 773-506-6004.

Practical Care Coordinators Needed
Practical
care coordinators work with 2U volunteers, small group ministries, and
committees to provide for the various practical needs of congregants, such as:
organizing meals, rides, errands, and light housework. Congregants typically
need help with the birth or adoption of a child, a serious illness, or a death
of a household member.
Team members send cards to
congregants mentioned during the pastoral prayer. They collect the pastoral care
concerns and summarize them for the 2U newsletter, The Anvil. They are encouraged to greet at least one new
person each Sunday after worship, and tell them about Pastoral
Care.
Ministry team meetings are held
the 1st Sunday
of the month before
worship. Coordinators
participate in the Sunday morning worship meeting. They provide mutual support,
share experiences from their ministries, and plan ministry for the
month.
This position
requires:
· attending worship
most Sundays,
· attending team
meetings,
· an application
& interview,
· a 1-year
commitment,
· 2-hours
training, and
· the 2U safe
congregation policy /criminal background check.
This is a
leadership role in the congregation. For your own well-being, 2U requests
volunteers engage in only one ministry at a time.

UU Quilters
Looking for a fun and productive way to spend a chilly
winter evening? The UU Quilters invite
you to join us and craft for a cause!
We are an
intergenerational group of sewers dedicated to the traditional craft of
quilting and UU principles. Past and current
projects include quilts we have made for babies born into UU congregations,
quilts we have donated to various causes whose missions are aligned with UU
principles, and the occasional ministerial stole.
No experience necessary and all
skill levels are welcomed (even if you have never threaded a needle!). All of our projects are collaborative-from
the planning stages to the actual stitching-and we learn from each other and
experiment with new techniques. Typically,
we work on several projects simultaneously and in various stages of
completion, so there is always something to do.
We invite you to join us for an
evening of friendly faces, good conversation and purposeful crafting. Best of all, it's free! For more information, please contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.
