board bookFrom the Board of Trustees

I am happy to announce the new members of your Board of Trustees who will serve until the end of the church year, June 30, 2010.  After being appointed to the new Board by the outgoing Board, I (Marva) have been elected by the new Board of Trustees to be the new Chair of your Board.  In addition to those responsibilities, I am working with the committee planning the Townhall meetings on February 28th and April 18th.

Dave is Chair Elect, and function as Chair if I am ever absent.  Dave has a wealth of experience with fundraising and stewardship and will co-lead a short term financial appeal as well as the spring canvass.  In addition, Dave is the Board liaison with the Committee on Ministries (COMs).

Jeff, who has previous experience as Board Treasurer, will be the new Board Treasurer.  Jeff will work with the Finance Committee to analyze our current financial condition and manage the budget.  He will also co-lead fundraising and stewardship activities with Dave Maly.

Mark is the new Secretary of your Board of Trustees.  Mark is the Board liaison with the Nominating Committee, which will be charged with nominating members for election to your 2010-2011 Board of Trustees as well as members of the Interim and Settled Minister Search Committees.

Curtis is your new Church Council Chair.  In addition to coordinating Council committee activities, Curtis is the Board liaison with the Buildings and Grounds Committee and serves as Co-Chair of the Social Justice Committee.

Lizzie, Board Trustee, is working with the planning committee of the two Townhall meetings scheduled for February 28 and April 18.

Mary, Board Trustee, previously served on the Safe Congregations Committee. She is now the Board liaison to that committee.

Board Chat Session
After the service on Sunday, February 7th, Board Trustees Dave, Lizzie, Mary  and Marva are hosting an informal discussion session.  Please come to share your questions, concerns and suggestions for 2U.

Board Meeting
The next meeting of your Board of Trustees is Wednesday, February 10th at 7:00PM at the Church.  All are welcome to attend.

Townhall Meetings
Sunday, February 28th and Sunday, April 18th
Board trustees Lizzie and Marva are working with an ad hoc committee to plan Townhall meetings stipulated by November's Congregational meeting.  The committee includes Jill, John, Laura, Liz, MarySue, Melissa, and Sue.

The first meeting, although originally scheduled for January, will be delayed until February 28th due to board and staff transitions. There are 3 purposes of the first meeting:

   1. Share information, including financial, staff and committee reports.
   2. Provide time for meeting participants to express their views on the challenges we face as a congregation, and
   3. Invite members and friends to be part of planning during the board and ministerial transition.

The second meeting is April 18th and will focus on discussing church governance and moving into our next phase, including interim and settled minister searches.

reflection Reflections
by Liz

I am a lifelong UU and a member of Second Unitarian for almost 4 years. I've been active in leadership at 2U, most notably with the Young Adult Ministry, which I helped lead for 3 years. In the past several months, an underlying, long-standing conflict was brought to light, ultimately resulting in the resignation of our minister, key leadership positions and a substantial amount of our members.

I personally was very hurt by these events and the way they unfolded. First and foremost, I felt blindsided. What had happened? I was confused and angry that my church world was turned upside-down. I felt our congregation shaken by loss of community and loss of trust in one another. I was so hurt, that I stayed away for the past two months. I wasn't sure if 2U was still a place for me. Many people I knew and loved were gone. But this past weekend, I returned, and decided to work on rebuilding. To be completely honest, I am still feeling sad and hurt, and I have some doubts about what the future holds.

So what brought me back? All it took was an invitation. I was asked to help plan the upcoming Town Hall Meetings, and this led to a candid conversation with five other members where we all shared our feelings and views on the conflict. Being able to listen and share was very healing. While I still feel hurt, it's time for me to let go of those feelings and move on. Rev. Adam Robersmith preached on Sunday that "even when we're sad, the way back is through connection, life and living," and I'm taking this advice to heart. I've decided that I'm going stay at 2U and try to move forward. Rather than sitting at home feeling sorry for the loss of my spiritual home, I will try to help rebuild and reconcile our community, and I invite you to do the same. I have hope that together, we can get through the tough times and come out as a stronger congregation.

If any of what I've said rings true to you, or you're still hurting, or you're not sure where you stand, I urge you to give 2U another shot. In the next few months, there will be several opportunities to reflect on past events and move forward in community. I invite you to the Listening and Sharing Worships, where you'll be able to share your thoughts, hear from others, and process your feelings. I invite you to the Town Hall Meetings, where you can find out about the current state of the church and help shape the future of 2U. I invite you to the 2U Dinners, where you'll meet in small groups at people's homes to share hospitality and be together in fellowship. Most of all, I invite you to come on Sunday and be together in worship. For me, just being there on Sunday was very healing. So come and see how you feel before you decide that 2U isn't for you anymore. And if you decide you need a break, I hope you'll keep 2U in your heart and come back when you are ready.

I also invite everyone, no matter how you feel, to think about your vision for 2U. This time of transition is difficult, but it also presents the unique opportunity for everyone to be involved in helping shape the future of our church. I also want to encourage everyone to try and let go of the hurt, rather than looking for whom to blame. If we are to get past this, we must move forward with good faith. I think that now, more than ever, we must heed the words of our covenant to "be generous with our gifts and honest in our communication, holding faithful to a love that embraces both diversity and conflict." Try embracing conflict literally by hugging someone you disagree with. It can be the most healing thing of all.

pride flagBLGTQ Brunch

The BGLTQ (Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Trangender, Queer and Questioning) Brunch & planning meeting will happen Sunday, 7 February, 11:45 AM (after worship) at a local eatery. Meet in the Palmer room at 11:45, and we will walk to a nearby place to eat.

Agenda: volunteer leaders, Freedom To Marry reception planning, Pride planning, Halsted Street Market Days planning.

Rev. Rudra Dundzila is organizing this meeting, but a congregant volunteers will assume responsibilities to organize and lead 2U's various BGLT commitments in the community.

practical carePractical Care Coordinators Needed

Practical care coordinators work with 2U volunteers, small group ministries, and committees to provide for the various practical needs of congregants, such as: organizing meals, rides, errands, and light housework. Congregants typically need help with the birth or adoption of a child, a serious illness, or a death of a household member.

Team members send cards to congregants mentioned during the pastoral prayer. They collect the pastoral care concerns and summarize them for the 2U newsletter, The Anvil. They are encouraged to greet at least one new person each Sunday after worship, and tell them about Pastoral Care.
Ministry team meetings are held the 1st Sunday of the month before worship. Coordinators participate in the Sunday morning worship meeting. They provide mutual support, share experiences from their ministries, and plan ministry for the month.

This position requires:
·       attending worship most Sundays,
·       attending team meetings,
·       an application & interview,
·       a 1-year commitment,
·       2-hours training, and
·       the 2U safe congregation policy /criminal background check.

This is a leadership role in the congregation. For your own well-being, 2U requests volunteers engage in only one ministry at a time.

quiltUU Quilters

Looking for a fun and productive way to spend a chilly winter evening?  The UU Quilters invite you to join us and craft for a cause!

We are an intergenerational group of sewers dedicated to the traditional craft of quilting and UU principles.  Past and current projects include quilts we have made for babies born into UU congregations, quilts we have donated to various causes whose missions are aligned with UU principles, and the occasional ministerial stole.
No experience necessary and all skill levels are welcomed (even if you have never threaded a needle!).  All of our projects are collaborative-from the planning stages to the actual stitching-and we learn from each other and experiment with new techniques.  Typically, we work on several projects simultaneously and in various stages of completion, so there is always something to do.

We invite you to join us for an evening of friendly faces, good conversation and purposeful crafting.  Best of all, it's free!  For more information, please contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.

Young Adult Ministry 2010 Kickoff Lunch

The 2U Young Adult Ministry invites young adult members and friends (between ages 18 and 35) and their partners or spouses to join us for lunch after service on February 7 at the Bagel Restaurant and Deli, 3107 N. Broadway. We'll gather in the Palmer Room as coffee hour winds down and head out from there.

We know this is Super Bowl Sunday, and we promise not to cut too far into anyone's pre-game plans -- this is just a chance for everyone to connect (or reconnect) and to hear a little about what's in the works for the ministry this year. To help us plan for the right size crowd, if you want to attend, please contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net. We'll also be around after services on January 30 to take names and talk about Young Adult Ministry (or anything you like -- we're pretty flexible).

The Young Adult Ministry works to create meaningful connections between young adults at 2U and with the broader church community, and to explore opportunities to serve both in the church and in the community around us. Whether you've recently moved to Chicago, or if you've been here all your life, our ministry recognizes and supports the joys and challenges of the many new beginnings in the lives of young adults at 2U.

Music Committee Update

by Nanna

I have agreed to chair the newly formed Music Committee at 2U. The responsibilities of the commmittee are still being defined. However, we will be meeting on Sunday, January 31 at 9 am in the LFD office. One of our first tasks will be selecting music and/or musicians for the February services. You are welcome to join the meeting if you have an interest in music at 2U, either as a performer or to provide input regarding music at 2U.
