Support the Night Ministry's Shelter for Teen Mothers

baby blocks
This holiday season, we are collecting for the Night Ministry's Open Door Youth Shelter in Lakeview.  It is an 8-bed, 8-crib 120-day interim shelter and supportive services program for homeless pregnant or parenting teen moms, ages 14-18. Here's how you can help. Bring one or more of the following items to church by December 20. You can also select a tag from the Christmas tree at church as a reminder.

  • Baby Memory Set - a disposable camera, baby photo album, and a CVS/Walgreen's $10 gift card to develop the pictures
  • New bath towels
  • New twin-size sheet sets
  • Organizers/planners (appropriate for teen girls)
  • Diaper bags
  • Battery-operated alarm clocks
  • Maternity pajamas/lounge pants
  • Baby slings/carriers (the papoose style)
  • Any of the following items for the new mom welcome kits: baby lotion, baby bath, petroleum jelly, pacifier, sleeper or onesie, baby towels, booties and hat set, baby powder, 8 oz. baby bottle, bottle brush, rattle, bib, book, diaper bags, receiving blanket and disposable diapers newborn or size one.
Please bring only new, unopened items without wrapping paper. You can leave them in labeled bins near the Christmas tree anytime through December 20.  (This is the service project chosen by two of the small groups that met this fall - Thank you!).

Happy Holidays,

winter solstice Bright Yule - Winter Solstice Celebration!
Sunday, December 20, 6:00pm

Come celebrate the Winter Solstice in a lay-led ritual. This ritual celebrates the gradual return of the sun's light after the darkest days of the year. All ages are welcome. Please brink a snack or drink to share afterward.

Sextons & Event Coordinator Needed

We are looking for Sextons and an Event Coordinator.

The sexton will work with those who contract to use church space.  Sextons open the building, help prep the building and return the space to normal after the event and close the building. Sextons are contracted by the renter for $15/hour.

The Event Coordinator mainly works coordinating events like weddings and is paid a percentage of the rental fee.

If interested please contact Business Manager, Chris Engler at office_2U@att.net or (773) 549-0620 x10.

Church Building Leader Needed

Given the restructuring of staff to focus on transition and day to day priorities, and the reduction in staff resources who handled routine maintenance and project work, we are in search of a volunteer Building Leader. This person would be solely responsible for all building maintenance, repair and minor improvement projects. He/she would work with the staff for ordering of necessary supplies and ensuring the building is prepared for any scheduled events/programming.  The role would not include sexton duties for rental events which are handled separately.

In her former position, Suzanne Larimer developed and maintained a list of desirable building projects - some of which are still under the review of the Capital Improvement Committee.  To see the list contact the church office at secondunitarian@att.net.  The list is long but it used to be a lot longer!  Maintenance duties have been added to make it complete and are the ongoing priority.   The Building Leader would ensure all maintenance items are cared for and secure volunteer or professional resources (within the designated budget) to complete projects as prioritized.

If you have the time, interest and talent to fulfill this role please contact a member of the Board of Trustees.
