snowflakeWith Gratitude
by Lisa Todd

This past Sunday I announced that my last day as Membership Coordinator at Second Unitarian Church is December 4.  There are many reasons for my departure.  One of the factors was a financial one.  The Board of Trustees knew that it was going to have to  make cuts in staffing levels or benefits in order to address a budget shortfall.  Given our minister's resignation and the necessary shift in focus (away from outreach and towards internal reflection) it seemed most appropriate to eliminate the Membership Coordinator position.  It is a decision that I supported and wanted.

I feel blessed to have had a "job" that allowed me to share my gifts so freely and cultivate the same in others.  You will never know how grateful I am for that.  I am thankful for the folks who partnered with me on the Hospitality Teams.  Working with the 40-50 volunteers each month to welcome every person who came up that sidewalk, look them in the eye, and tell them that we were glad they were at church - that was one of my great joys.  I knew the stories of isolation and loneliness, work pressure and relationship failure.  I knew that our warmth and presence cut through that stuff a little bit and made people more open to everything else.

I am grateful to all the people who partnered with me on Small Group Ministry too. We began as one starter group in the summer of 2008 and now my thank you list includes 22 people who have facilitated groups, many of you more than once. A little more than 100 people signed up for a small group this fall. I hope you will continue the connections that were made and continue to prioritize your spiritual life.  I am thrilled to see how the groups of 8-12 people have turned into little "mini-churches," offering spiritual sustenance and pastoral care while building community and creating opportunities for service.

For so many things I am thankful.  But I know that it is time for me to leave. My family and I will be seeking a new faith community.  We are deeply saddened to bear witness for a third time to the leaving of our settled minister.  I pray that each of you acts with love towards each other in the days ahead.  Peace, 2U.

Support the Night Ministry's Shelter for Teen Mothers

baby blocks
This holiday season, we are collecting for the Night Ministry's Open Door Youth Shelter in Lakeview.  It is an 8-bed, 8-crib 120-day interim shelter and supportive services program for homeless pregnant or parenting teen moms, ages 14-18. Here's how you can help. Bring one or more of the following items to church by December 20. You can also select a tag from the Christmas tree at church as a reminder.

  • Baby Memory Set - a disposable camera, baby photo album, and a CVS/Walgreen's $10 gift card to develop the pictures
  • New bath towels
  • New twin-size sheet sets
  • Organizers/planners (appropriate for teen girls)
  • Diaper bags
  • Battery-operated alarm clocks
  • Maternity pajamas/lounge pants
  • Baby slings/carriers (the papoose style)
  • Any of the following items for the new mom welcome kits: baby lotion, baby bath, petroleum jelly, pacifier, sleeper or onesie, baby towels, booties and hat set, baby powder, 8 oz. baby bottle, bottle brush, rattle, bib, book, diaper bags, receiving blanket and disposable diapers newborn or size one.
Please bring only new, unopened items without wrapping paper. You can leave them in labeled bins near the Christmas tree anytime through December 20.  (This is the service project chosen by two of the small groups that met this fall - Thank you!).

From the Director of Programs
by Gabrielle Parra

During this time of transition in the life of the church my role in the church is also changing.  As we are now without a settled minister or membership coordinator, I can better serve the church by working as liaison to our Board of Trustees to help coordinate Sunday morning services as well as handle many of our church's administrative matters. The Board and I have worked closely to realign my position to Director of Programs in order to best meet the needs of our community at this time.
I will continue to oversee church communications. I will also continue to be at church most Sundays.  I will be working with the Lifespan Faith Development Council to transfer my other responsibilities to lay leaders in the church. I will be using the secondunitarian@att.net address.  Messages to the faithdev_2u@att.net will be transferred to that address but please make note of the change.

In faith,
Gabrielle
