Serve and Be Served: A Big Success!
by Lisa Todd
I just wanted to send out a big thank you to all who helped out with the Serve and Be
Served day. I knew it was going to be a great day together but even I was blown
away. I have to give a special shout out to Jennifer Burgess and the other
members of her small group who created such a great soup lunch and to the
Lifespan Faith Development Council for providing dessert. I still haven't found
out how the tables and chairs got set up so quickly without me hearing any
banging around. Mystery
elves...
Anyway, I wanted to share the
totality of our efforts. I know that some of you slipped away without me
thanking you properly. Here's what we were able to accomplish:
-
Winterized the windows in the
childrens classrooms and nurseries
-
Winterized the windows in the
sanctuary
-
Planted spring bulbs in the
parkway planters and in the garden, west of the Barry
St. doors and raked and bagged
leaves
-
Donated and assembled items for
over 50 hygiene kits and 4 full bags of cookie packets and packaged 4000 condoms
for the Night Ministry Outreach
bus.
Serve and Be Served days will take place on the second Sunday of every month. Our next Serve and Be Served day will be Sunday, December 13.
Peace 2U

From the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees of Second Unitarian Church has called
a special meeting for 11/22 at 11:30
a.m. A notification letter was mailed out to all members on
November 5 which highlights two motions to be voted on. Also, in accordance
with our bylaws, a second notice was mailed out on November 6 for a special
meeting to take place immediately following the first. (A third letter was sent
out by petition organizers with the presumption that the petition request was
not being handled in accordance with our bylaws.) Please read the letters very
carefully and don't hesitate to contact any board member with questions.
Here's why we're holding two separate meetings: the first
one is being called by the Board of Trustees to try to understand where we
stand with the congregation, and the second is being held as a result of a
petition request for a special meeting. The Board of Trustees called the first
meeting after learning that a petition was circulating. We were frustrated that no one felt they could
approach us to discuss a constructive solution to the issues before a secret
process was initiated. We were very concerned about the significant breakdown
of trust in the church.
At our annual meeting in May,
a member made a motion that was a reasonable request for pastor accountability.
While this is certainly within members' rights, it was hurtful in two ways: 1)
Reverend Owen-O'Quill was asked- and we allowed her- to leave the sanctuary,
and 2) having held several town hall meetings to get issues on the table in
advance, this one was never brought up. The same pattern is playing out with
the petition process and we don't think this is how any of us want to be in
community.
Both instances were highly visible examples of members not
trusting the "Trustees" enough to work through concerns together. As much as it
saddens me, I do believe that if the congregation does not trust the current
board of trustees, then we should be replaced. I truly hope that this is not
the case, and that this becomes an opportunity to recommit as a community
to our covenant and to honest communication.
The first meeting will ask members to affirm confidence in
elected leadership and as a result, entrust us to continue the process that was
initiated (and that I referred to in the last Anvil) after the annual
meeting. If the Trustees are not
affirmed then we will invite the congregation to hold a future meeting to
replace the current Trustees. If
Trustees are not affirmed, then we will then reluctantly move forward with the
second meeting. The petition's stated purpose for this second meeting is to
vote on four resolutions- one of which would be a vote of confidence on our
pastor. The Board of Trustees believes, in no uncertain terms, that regardless
of the vote, this second meeting would be seriously detrimental to the whole of
our community.
Please know that we all share in confusion and hurt that has
both caused and been caused by this. We are working to be the reconciling and
loving community that we all want and need 2U to be.
In faith,
The Board of Trustees

Bulbs Planted
Thanks again to the
Monday night small group
for buying and planting spring bulbs in the front garden and planters. The
children also donated $123.50 from their Sunday collection to help in the
effort. The children also chose to support the work of Our Renewable Nation (www.ourrenewablenation.org). In both their outward and inward contribution they chose to lift our value of
caring for the earth and the interdependence of our living. Can't wait for
spring!

Lakeview Pantry
by Stuart Iseminger, 2U member and Director of Programs and
Operations, Lakeview Pantry
Second Unitarian has been a steady and long-time supporter of Lakeview
Pantry and is November's recipient of half of the offering plate cash.
Lakeview Pantry provides on-site food distribution, a home delivery service for the
homebound, distributes free clothing and has a case management program in order
to help clients connect with other services they may need.
Those we see are of every race, religion, age and background. In fact, they
have only two shared characteristics: They have low income (average income is
about $400 per month) and they have no where else to turn. Clients can visit
the Pantry once a month and will walk out with enough food to last them for two
weeks -- enough to make their lives a little less of a struggle. Lakeview Pantry is one of the few pantries in
the city to offer food distribution to homeless people. We purchase, or obtain
donations of specially packaged foods that do not require refrigeration or can
openers for the homeless population who seek our services. I've learned some additional facts:
-
Every
$1 donated buys 10 pounds of food to someone in need.
- A
$25 gift provides a two week supply of food to five people.
-
Lakeview
Pantry is one of Chicago's
most used pantries with about 2,600 getting help from us each month.
-
Every
year we distribute 1,300,000 pounds of food to our clients.
-
Somebody
gets food from Lakeview Pantry every 17 minutes.
-
About
1 of 5 visitors is using our service for the first time.
-
About 1
of 7 clients is homeless.
- Lakeview
Pantry uses over 500 volunteers each year. Volunteers donate over 14,000
hours of time each year, the equivalent of seven full-time staff.
Currently, we are promoting our "Holidays of Hands, Health, and Hope"
campaign:
HANDS! - Visit us for our Open House
events and help us sort donations and stock shelves on November 17 and 19 at
6:00 p.m. at 3831 N. Broadway.
HEALTH! - Organize your own food drive
focusing on healthy foods (organic or special dietary needs food items
preferred). Donations can be dropped off
at 3831 N. Broadway Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
HOPE! - Make a financial contribution of
any size and bring hope to hundreds of our neighbors in need. Donations can be mailed to the address above
or made online at www.lakeviewpantry.org
and clicking on the orange "Donate" button.
2U
is a generous community that gives its time and resources to this
neighborhood. On behalf of the neighbors
we serve, and the staff of Lakeview Pantry, THANK YOU!
