planting bulbsPlant Bulbs on Sunday Nov. 1

Please join us THIS Sunday, November 1 to plant bulbs in the church's front yard after the 10:00 service. One of our Monday evening small groups is organizing this event.  The children voted to contribute half of their collection money towards purchasing bulbs. The Monday night small group has also contributed to purchase the bulbs. YOU can contribute by volunteering your time and energy by helping us plant the bulbs and do some other gardening and landscaping tasks around the church. This is a great way for people of all ages to serve the church. Bring your gardening gloves, and we'll see you on Sunday!

Check out Rev. Owen-O'Quill's blog at pastorjen.com.
soup Serve and be Served
Sunday, November 8, 12:30-3:30

Do you want to volunteer and make a difference but aren't sure how to fit it in to your schedule?  Have you been wishing that you knew people better at church?  Do you eat lunch?

On Sunday, November 8 2U is going to give you the chance to fill all three of those needs!  We are going to come together to serve some of the people in our larger community AND help winterize the church AND have yummy hot soup lunch together.  Service, stewardship and fellowship all in one afternoon!  Please join in the fun and the work and the food.

Whether you can volunteer on the 8th or not we encourage you to bring:
  • packages of store bought cookies (for Night Ministry Outreach bus)
  • toiletries, sample sizes of toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes  (for Night Ministry Outreach bus)
Other volunteers will be able to take your donations and assemble them into the hygiene and hospitality packets that are shared with people who get dinner from the Night Ministry Outreach bus.

This is an all ages welcome type of event.  If you would like to participate OR if you would like to help organize and coordinate this event with Lisa Todd, please contact her at secondunitarian@att.net.

From the Board of Trustees
In a June Anvil article, I wrote "the board has come to realize that how we govern ourselves in these increasingly dynamic and uncertain times needs at least a major tune-up if not a serious overhaul." Although many of us had been coming to this realization for some time, the congregation passed a motion at our annual meeting that commits us to acting upon this realization.

That motion and its amendments were as follows:
  • The congregation will create and adopt, before the start of fiscal year 2010-2011, a concise statement which defines the responsibilities of the relationship between pastor and congregation and that the congregation arrives at this statement through a process which establishes new standards for transparency and accountability.
  • The motion was amended to place the task of establishing responsibilities and functions with the Committee on Ministries.
  • A second amendment was passed to provide a formal mechanism to bring the issues and concerns to the Committee on Ministries.
The board of trustees has heard the concerns and is acting to address them as completely as we can and at the same time better positions our church to thrive in these times and in this neighborhood. To that end, in our October meeting we made the following decisions:
  • To create an executive committee to facilitate better communication between Council, Committee on Ministries, the Board of Trustees, the Minister.
  • We updated the charter for the Committee on Ministries, a first step in recruiting a full committee and clarifying its responsibilities.
  • We charged the executive committee, plus one additional board trustee, to interview church consultants and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees at the November meeting.
To read the draft resolutions, the new charter for the Committee on Ministries, and the Statement of Purpose for church consultant, please see the attached file. I encourage you to contact me with any questions, ideas, and yes, even encouragement.

Faithfully,
Nate
