intergen tapestry From the Dir. of Faith Development

Reflections on our intergenerational worship services: Admittedly, I was nervous about leading worship for the first time on my own. Nervous though I was, it turned out to be a truly meaningful experience for me. I got the chance to see what it was like to plan a service, top to bottom, thinking about content, flow, pastoral prayer, music... It's a lot of work!  And it was well worth it. I got many comments about the service (thanks to all of you who took the time). I heard from people in all stages of life, young singles, married couples, families with children and elders, that they enjoy and find meaning in worshipping with our children. I even had one of those conversations with a church member on the bus on my way home.

The father of one of our Spirit Play kids told me after service that as he sat with his daughter in worship, she pointed to me, Mary and Kristen on the chancel, whispering excitedly, "Daddy, Daddy those are my teachers!"

This first quarter of the church year has been my opportunity to learn how to create and lead an intergenerational worship service. As we move into a regular schedule of intergenerational worship once a month, I need the help, participation and attendance of families with children. Together we can create authentic shared worship experiences for everyone, while teaching our children our liturgy and rituals and how to be in the Sanctuary for an extended time. I believe this is important to the faith development of our whole community. It is certainly important to my own personal faith development.

Thank you so much to Rev. Owen-O'Quill from whom I have learned so much about leading worship.  Her faith in my leadership has given me the chance to grow spiritually as I lead our intergenerational services.

I would also like to extend a hearty thank-you to those who have helped craft and/or lead intergenerational worship thus far.

If you are interested in helping with our monthly intergenerational worship services, please let me know.

In faith,
Gabrielle Parra

Pass It On!
by Gabrielle Parra

During our last intergenerational worship service on September 27, we had a responsive reading, which some children from 2nd Unitarian's Children & Youth Faith Development program helped write. I found a responsive reading in a collection, and thought it would be much more fun to hear what the 2U kids would pass on.  I spent a Friday afternoon (luckily a school holiday!) calling 2U kids.  Children ages 4-12 contributed, including those who just came to this church for the first time a few weeks ago, to those who have called this church home since infancy.  I was moved by how eager these kids were to share in creating a poem for our worship.  Every child who helped me came to church that Sunday and heard their words spoken from the pulpit. The reading follows:

pass it on

Look someone right in the eye and listen to them as if they are the only one in the world at that moment. Let them know you care.
Pass it on!
Paint somebody's house a pretty color.
Pass it on!
Share a passion with others - a hobby, a cause, an idea, a creative process that brings energy and joy.
Pass it on!
Give love and a hug.
Pass it on!
Show somebody how to climb a slide.
Pass it on!
Wear a big, bright smile.
Pass it on!
Hope for peaceful relations among the peoples of the world, beginning with our own actions toward those around us.
Pass it on!
Show someone how to climb a tree in your backyard.
Pass it on!
Teach someone how to recycle.
Pass it on!
Teach everyone the Golden Rule.
Pass it on!
Pass it on. Share the big things and the little things that make your life special. Give a piece of happiness and hope to someone, and happiness and hope will come back to you.

mary poppinsFrom the Music Director
I am writing to let you know of a new opportunity in my life and career. I will be joining the national tour of Mary Poppins as their 2nd keyboardist for 6 weeks in Dallas and Houston, Texas from September 26th - November 9th, 2009. This is an exciting opportunity for me. During my time away Elisa Carlson will be taking over the duties as music director. Elisa is a very talented multi-instrumentalist with piano as her main instrument, a very creative and collaborative thinker, and a very artistic individual with experience in many types of music and dance. I think that she will be a very good fit for 2U and I'm excited about the new ideas and possibilities that she will bring. 2U has been a wonderful place to work for the past 6 years and I look forward to this experience to recharge and explore a different aspect of my career. See you in November!

Chicago Area Unitarian Universalist Congregations (CAUUC) News

The Treasures of Uptown:  A series of interfaith gatherings
People's Church of Chicago will hold a series of Sunday afternoon gatherings to explore how interreligious cooperation among the world's diverse faith communities can contribute to peace in the world and greater recognition of human rights.  The first such gathering features the Reverend Dirk Ficca, executive director of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions, happening on Sunday, October 11, 1-4 pm.  Long-timers will recognize the Parliament as having been founded by a group of Unitarians in the 1890's, led by Jenkin Lloyd Jones.  Its focus has remained on building a vibrant interreligious movement in Chicago and around the world, and indeed such enthusiasm was generated by the 1993 World Parliament in Chicago, led by the Rev. Ficca, that Parliaments have been subsequently convened in Capetown in 19999, Barcelona in 2004, Monterrey in 2007, and Melbourne this December, 2009.  The series "Treasures of Uptown" - referring to the diverse people and faiths of the urban neighborhood - will be held monthly on the Second Sunday, 1-4 pm at the People's Church of Chicago.  www.peopleschurchchicago.org
