Rev. Dr. Rudra Dundzila Installed as Community Minister at Second Unitarian by Lisa Todd
Rev. Dr. Rudra Dundzila will be installed as Community Minister of Second Unitarian Church during the church service on May 17. Community ministers are persons qualified to perform ministries of counseling, chaplaincy, social justice, education in religious studies, or other such ministries recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Associations's Ministerial Fellowship Committee.
The primary arena of Rev. Dundzila's ministry will be as a a Professor of Humanities and Comparative Religion with Harry S. Truman College. As a Community Minister of our church, we understand Rudra's ministry to be an extension of our own ministry. Within the church arena, Rudra will seek to be available, as needed and mutually agreed upon, as back-up to the Parish Minister. He may perform rites of passage, provide on-call services, pastoral care, teaching and preaching. Rev. Dundzila currently leads the Pastoral Care Ministry at Second Unitarian and directs the Illinois Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry. Please join with us to celebrate the ministry of our dear friend and fellow congregant, Rev. Dr. Rudra Dundzila.

Night Ministry Volunteers Needed for Summer Dates
Second Unitarian provides meals for the Night Ministry's Youth Outreach Team (YOT) about twice a month. The YOT provides services for homeless youth in Lakeview, many of whom are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Many have left situations where they were bullied by their classmates, scorned by their religious communities, and rejected or abused by their families. Seeking a more tolerant community and a network of friendship and social support, many of them arrive in Lakeview homeless. Through the Night Ministry Youth Outreach van, the team provides counseling, services and referrals and the church volunteers provide the food for the evening. During the summer we will be providing sandwiches, fruit, a snack item and a drink for about 200 people. We gather at the church to assemble the food at 6pm. Around 7:30 pm the Night Ministry staff will meet us to answer any questions and plan the evening. We then walk over to the intersection of Belmont and Halsted to serve the dinner until 10pm. Volunteers are welcome for any and all parts of the evening. Volunteering during the summer can be a great project for families with kids. The children are not able to go out and serve the food but they are welcome to help us with the preparation at the church. Volunteers have been donating the food but it is not required. If you cannot serve but can help donate food (or money to purchase food) that would be tremendously helpful. 2U has committed to prepare and serve food on the following nights:June 4 (Th) and June 23 (Tue)July 9 (Th) and July 23 (Tue)August 6 (Th) and August 25 (Tue)September 10 (Th) and September (Tue)We're confident that you'll enjoy the time spent in the company of your fellow church members and the satisfaction of helping our most vulnerable neighbors. Please e-mail us at secondunitarian@att.net to let us know you can volunteer to help or are interested in purchasing food.

Special June Music Worship Events - Save the Dates
Music Sunday, June 7thJune
7 is our annual Music Sunday intergenerational worship service. A service filled
with music and a special message from Blake Adams, our Choir Director. June 7 is
also Blake's last day at the church so please come to help us celebrate the
wonderful ministry that Blake has brought to the church over the past 2 1/2 years. Show Tune Sunday & Pride Parade, June 28thJune 28th is the Chicago Pride
Parade which happens every year just around the corner from the church. To
celebrate the Pride Parade we are having a special intergenerational worship
service called Show Tune Sunday. The worship service's message of social justice
will be portrayed through song and word. Then, after the service, we will march
together in the parade. Please bring your friends and family to this great
event! We also need volunteers to help with coordinating the parade so if you
are able to help out, please contact Lisa Todd secondunitarian@att.net .

2U Rummage Sale Is Hitting the Streets
The church rummage sale(s) is coming up. We originally planned to conduct one sale at the church on June 13. Instead, during the month of June we are going to have church members host rummage sales in their own neighborhoods and then donate the proceeds of the sale back to the church. Can you be one the rummage sale sites?
This is a great way to volunteer to help the church AND clean out your home at the same time. We will help you with the organization and promotion and recruit volunteers for you. You get to pick the weekend in June that works best for your schedule. If you cannot host but have unwanted and gently used items please save them
for the Rummage Sales! Antiques,
glassware, china, tools, books, baubles, games - just about anything is welcome
as long as it is complete and in good working order.
If you would like to help, or if you are able to be a host for one of the rummage sale sites please contact Lisa Todd at secondunitarian@att.net . Specific dates and locations will be announced in the coming weeks.

Green Sanctuary News by Susie I.
Clean Water Helps Cantina Night Go Green Recycled Brita
water filters will turn into the plates we are going to use for the
Cantina Night fundraiser! Drop your Britta filters off at any
Chicago Whole Foods in the Preserve "Gimme 5" recycling bin! Preserve will recycle the
Brita plastic pitcher filter casings received into Preserve's eco-friendly, 100
percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. All
Preserve plastic products are also recyclable, giving BritaŽ filter materials a
third life. The filter ingredients-activated carbon that reduces chlorine (taste
and odor) and ion exchange resin that reduces lead, mercury, copper, and cadmium
and zinc that might be found in tap water-will be regenerated for alternative
use or converted into energy.
Our Renewable Nation - A Cross-Country Eco-Video Project comes to
2U On Sunday, June
21st, there will be a spotlight luncheon after services to show off an Eco-Video
project. During the winter, I learned about the McCullough family. After viewing some of their projects online, I was interested in connecting our community and the children in our community with 9-year-old Carrick McCullough. Already, Carrick has received numerous awards for his eco-videos. For the months of May and June, the McCullough family will be
touring the U.S. as an eco-video travel project. They will be visiting
large-scale sites like wind and solar farms, as well as new companies with
potentially game-changing technologies that will be key to a sustainable
future. They will also be interviewing people whose ideas and actions have
inspired many to live more sustainably. The goal is to distribute the video profiles free to
schools nationally and online, with the mission of inspiring and empowering kids
to create a renewable and sustainable future.
Find out more about their project including the videos! The McCullough family
will be in Chicago on June 20th and 21st. Can anyone host
their family of 4 for the night of June 20th? We also need volunteers to bring food and help host the spotlight luncheon and to help get the word out.
Please email secondunitarian@att.net.
