A Unitarian Universalist Reflection on Spring
Rev. Barbara Carlson

I wonder if the river ever despairs of its downward destiny, and harbors a secret desire to flow north?

I wonder if winter yearns to be summer, or if a flower wishes it could bloom out of season?

I wonder if silence would like to shout, or if the sky wants to fall down and become the earth?

I wonder if the bird longs to become a rabbit, or if the fish ever dreams of walking on the land?

I wonder if the mountains envy the valleys, or if snow secretly covets the warmth of June?

I wonder if the moon complains that is it not the sun, or if the stars envy the earth?

I wonder if rain prefers a cloudless sky, or if grass tires of green
and hopes for blue?

I wonder if spring really likes growing, or if fall rages against its colorful dying?

I wonder if the world ever sighs after more than it is -- like you and I, like you and I?

O Spirit of Life, we struggle against our limitations; teach us to accept them.

Update on the Lakeview Pantry Food Drive
On Sunday March 15, Rev. Owen-O'Quill challenged members and friends of 2nd Unitarian Church to collect 2,000 pounds of tuna fish for the Lakeview Food Pantry.  Our community accepted that challenge and exceeded it by far.  We collected 5,000 pounds of food!

foodpile

Almost 100 volunteers assembled collection bags, distributed them in the Lakeview neighborhood, staffed the Lakeview Pantry van so that people in the Lakeview neighborhood could drop off their donations in the evening, and helped load and unload the food.

loading food

We collected so much food that not all of it fit in Lakeview Pantry's van.  Members of 2nd Unitarian packed up their own cars and mini-vans and delivered the food to the Lakeview Pantry.  Many people brought their (and their neighbors and friends) donations of tuna and other food to the church.

On Easter afternoon, the volunteers gathered together at 2nd Unitarian for a potluck community dinner in fellowship and celebration of a job well done.

From the Board of Trustees

It has been a busy-and challenging-year for many of us. I'm thankful to be surrounded by a fantastic team of leaders. The volunteers who serve on the board of trustees, the Church Council and dozens of committees make significant personal sacrifices to enhance the value of Second Unitarian. Equally as impressive is the time and energy staff commits to not just improving the fellowship and worship experiences at 2U, but also to keeping 2U afloat during these difficult financial times. I am indebted to all of our leaders-both lay and staff-for rising to the occasion.

As we enter the spring and summer months, I want to share some exciting news about staffing at the church. First, after the annual meeting in May, Rev. Jennifer Owen-O'Quill will be taking some time off for a study break/sabbatical and vacation. She'll use part of that time for some much-needed rest and to recharge her batteries. She'll also be charting a course for our ministries. Thankfully, our ministerial intern, Katie Norris, has agreed to stay on as the summer minister. This provides us with a great deal of stability and continuity as Katie has been working side-by-side with Jennifer for the past year. A committee made up of representatives from the board, the Committee on Ministries, the council and staff will provide support and council to Katie.

The board is also happy to announce that we've expanded the hours and duties of Lisa Todd, our membership coordinator, to focus on visitor outreach. Data from the worship surveys that were taken earlier this year show that nearly 45 percent of attendees on any give Sunday are visitors-18 percent new visitors, 27 percent returning. To ensure that we are serving both the needs of members and visitors, the board endorsed a recommendation from the Personnel Committee to expand Lisa's duties for the remainder of this fiscal year. Several benchmarks were put in place to help us measure the effectiveness of this decision.

Please join me in congratulating Katie and Lisa. They are valued parts of our community and I'm certain that they will excel in their new positions.
Intergenerational Worship Workshop

Mark Morrison-Reed Book Reading
mark morrison-reedWednesday April 29, 7:00pm

Mark Morrison-Reed will be reading from his memoir, In Between: Memoir of an Integration Baby, which gives voice to the unspoken story of those Afro-Americans who were among the first to bring racial diversity to their neighborhood, school, church or workplace, to the increasing number of partners in interracial relationships and those blessed with and yet struggling to raise multiracial children in a polarized world.

Mark Morrison-Reed is a minister and an historian. He also worked as a janitor, waiter, dish washer, community organizer, group worker, teacher, security guard and assistant manager before earning his Masters Degree in Divinity and publishing his groundbreaking thesis Black Pioneers in a White Denomination, now in its third edition. Now retired, he and his wife, Donna, live on a tiny island outside of Toronto.

Social Justice Corner
spertus 1 Working for social justice in our community is an important way Unitarian Universalists express their faith.

Call-to-Action: Justice for All Children: Bringing Fairness to School Funding.
Join us and learn how we can change the way our state funds public education for our children. Illinois ranks 49th in the nation in the amount of school funding provided by state revenues. The state's inequitable school funding system has had severe, negative impact on student academic performance. A new and fair statewide funding program is necessary.

This call-to-action event is a great moment for us, as members of 2U, to take effective and meaningful action to change education funding policy for all children in our state.  Let's stand together for educational justice.

Date:
  Sunday, April 19, 2009
Time: 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Location: St. Pauls United Church of Christ - 2335 N. Orchard Ave., Chicago. (Corner of Fullerton and Orchard)

If you are interested, I would like to organize a group of us to attend this training together after our church services.  Please contact the church at 773-549-0260 or secondunitarian@att.net.

Peace with justice

Families with Children Small Group Ministry
family We are very excited to announce the launching of a Families with Children Small Group Ministry. We get so little time to spend with our families in this fast paced, busy society. Second Unitarian Church wants to create a space for your family to be able to spend quality time together talking about what is most important to you.

In this small group, families will be taking time to talk about how they want to live in relationship with each other and the larger world around them. Through age appropriate activities for all ages we will be exploring our family values. A typical meeting will look like this: first the families will all gather together for food and fellowship, then they will have some time for conversation, next comes individual family activity time (we will be journaling, painting, making pictures and much more) and then everyone will come back together to share with the group what they feel comfortable sharing.

This is a whole family activity where the whole household must be present. Why? Because we will be talking about what you all value the most and we want the whole family to be able to be a part of learning about each other, deciding how they want to live in the world, and coming closer together.

The small group will meet for four weeks in a row on Sunday May 31, Sunday June 7, Sunday June 14, and Saturday June 20 in Loft from 12pm - 2 pm which includes lunch/fellowship time. Please note that our last meeting is on Saturday instead of Sunday like the first three sessions. If you would like more information or would like to sign up please contact Director of Faith Development, Gabrielle Parra at faithdev_2U@att.net. Space is limited. We look forward to entering into this new ministry with you and your family.
Green Sanctuary News
Our Renewable Nation - A Cross-Country Eco-Video Project comes to 2U

For the months of May and June 2009, the McCullough family will be touring the U.S. as an eco-video travel project. They will be visiting large-scale sites like wind and solar farms, as well as new companies with potentially game-changing technologies that will be key to a sustainable future.
They will also be interviewing people whose ideas and actions have inspired many to live more sustainably. Their 9-year-old son Carrick, whose award-winning eco-videos have been seen online by over 200,000 people, will narrate the videos.
The goal is to distribute the video profiles free to schools nationally and online, with the mission of inspiring and empowering kids to create a renewable and sustainable future.

The McCullough family will be in Chicago on June 20th and 21st.  They need our help!  Can anyone host their family of 4 for the night of June 20th?

Then on Sunday, June 21st, there will be a spotlight luncheon after services to show off their project.  For that we need volunteers to bring food and get the word out.  Please contact the church if you can help in any capacity secondunitarian@att.net or 773-549-0260.

Find out more about their project including the videos!
