Reduce, Reuse, Recycle...Did you know?
The average functional lifespan of a desktop computer is roughly 2 to 5 years. Burning them creates carcinogens, burying them contaminates the ground and water.
In 2005, the amount of disposed computers and peripherals totaled more than 67,000 tons in Canada.
Canadians bury or incinerate 158,000 tons of dead and obsolete computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, TV's, mobile phones and similar products every year.
Manufacturing computers is material intensive; the total fossil fuels used to make one desktop computer weigh over 240 kilograms, some 10 times the weight of the computer itself. This is very high compared to many other goods, for example, the weight of fossil fuels used for production of cars and fridges is roughly equal to their weights.
STL educates youth about the long term benefits of recycling and reusing computers. Each recipient's sphere of influence, (estimated at upwards of 30+ people), has the opportunity to learn about how a refurbished computer works just as well as a new computer.
