June 2012 Update

National Bike Month was celebrated throughout the Berkshires in May.  The Bikefest in North County gathered a sizeable audience for their films and over 50 children participated in the bike rodeo at MASS MOCA.  With Jay Whalen at the helm, a group of enthusiastic volunteers held a very successful event.  Equally exciting was the 240 Williamstown Elementary School students who rode their bikes to school.  Pittsfield Parks and Recreation conducted their third annual Community Ride and cycled their way to the State Forest and back.  During the week of June 7, Pittsfield is encouraging City Employees and others to ride to work.

All these activities, increase interest in cycling and expand the consistency of people who want safe places to ride.  This month's issue hopes to expand that group to people with disabilities.  The Everyone Rides program described below makes accessible bike equipment available free.  And for the more experienced rider there are a number of community rides worth your consideration.  Check out the calendar below.

Adaptive riding equiptment
It's time for everyone to get riding! United Cerebral Palsy will be holding two sessions for people to get fitted for adapted bikes to be borrowed for use on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail this season. The two dates are Tuesday, June 26th from 1-3pm and Wednesday, July 12th from 1-3pm. United Cerebral Palsy staffers, Samantha Spence, Physical Therapist and Cailtin Grant, Physical Therapy Assistant will be conducting the fittings at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) building located on Route 8 in Cheshire. This program began last year. There is no appointment necessary. Individuals will be fitted in the order in which they arrive. The fittings allow the therapists to determine which of the adapted bikes is best suited for each individual and take a maximum of 20 minutes. Over the past 10 years, Farnam's Challenge with the support of Ad Lib and BBPC has raised over $15,000.  Funds have been used to support individual athletes and their participation in events and conferences.  This year $10,000 worth of adaptive equipment has been purchased.  Additional bikes have been purchased by United Cerebral Palsy through its Assistive Technology Regional Center funded by the Massachusetts Assistive Technology Act Project (MassMatch) program operated through the Massachusettts Rehabilitation Commission. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has constructed a shed next to their facility on Route 8.  And the equipment is NOW AVAILABLE- FREE for anyone who requires adaptive support to ride on the Ashuwillticook rail rail .  Three wheel cycles provide stability for individuals who are unable to ride more traditional bikes.  Hand cycles provide an alternative for folks unable to use their legs.

Once individuals interested in using the equipment have been correctly fitted for an adapted bike, they will call  Dawn Matthews, UCP Director of Assistive Technology  at 442-1562 to schedule their bike ride.  Dawn  will then coordinate with the staff at the DCR to insure delivery of the equipment to the Farnam's Crossing Parking lot to ride.
