Jan 2012 Update

This has to been one of the longest biking seasons in history and as reported by road rider, Pete Persoff, folks were still riding on New Year's Day.  Sara Lafayette's report on Western New England Greenway could have us riding from Canada to NYC .  It has also been a season of active advocacy for future trails.

Our 2012 goals are to continue our efforts to increase public awareness of bike path initiatives, to develop new political bike path advocates, to advocate for the distribution of  existing bike path funds, ie. Scenic Byway allocations and Transportation funds, and to encourage future path development.

Please find a way you can help us reach our goals - Stay informed - read our enewsletter,  attend a community meeting or an educational workshop, help at a community event, contact your political leaders, let them know you WANT a bike path in your community and tell a friend about BBPC-and add them to our mailing list.

Thanks for your support.

Still Riding - Report from Pete Persoff

"First Annual New Years Day Ride" went off without a hitch!! There were 8 of us..... plus Kathleen and Gary started with us to ride up Greylock on their own. They got most of the way up on the bikes until about the last mile, when the ice got in their way and they hiked up the rest of the way. The rest of us eight used some sechel (Yiddish for brains) and did a 32 mile ride in very good conditions. What a treat it was to get out at this time of the year! Kathleen and Gary made it back, believe it or not!!!

ADVOCATE

Town Hall meetings in Pittsfield and in Lenox provided an opportunity to get bike paths on the agenda for Department of Transportation and the Regional Master Plan.  At the public meeting at the DCR headquarters, Marge finally had the opportunity to request that Secretary Sullivan encourage his department heads to actively pursue the purchase of the Housatonic Rail bed from Lanesboro to Merrill Road.

Our presence at these meeting is important.  The Jan 31 meeting is an opportunity to witness the decision making process for the $2.3 million allocation.  Do consider attending.

Western New England Greenway Conference Summary

On Saturday, November 19, 2011 a group of 24 bike and planning enthusiasts gathered at the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont to discuss the merits and challenges of establishing a "multi-segment, multi-state" greenway that would link NYC and Montreal. The corridor being pursued largely follows Route 7 through the very western portions of CT, MA and VT. It would link with the East Coast Greenway at the Merritt Parkway near Norwalk, CT at the Southern terminus, and with Quebec's Route Verte at the Northern terminus (at the Canadian border). After a variety of speakers  honed in on their specific bike visions and trails, the group discussed the next steps for the initiative. In the end there was consensus that the Trails & Greenways Committee of the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area will continue to move forward to draft a mission statement and develop a "Ride-It-Now" map in the coming months.
