October 2009 Update

There still are opportunities for beautiful foliage outings that are worth bundling up for.  But even as the cycling season ends, our bike path work continues.  This issue lists information on local committee meetings, an opportunity to learn about how to improve biking conditions and a community ride for beginners.

fall picture
Our major goal this year is to hold public meetings throughout the county.  These meetings are designed to increase community awareness, enlist new supporters and further define bike path routes.   It is critical that bike path supporters attend these meetings.   Too often we are surprised by the "not in my backyard" representation and the negative energy that prevails, when in fact the naysayers represent only a small percentage of the community.  We must be prepared to respond to their concerns and enlist their support.  When you see a meeting scheduled, gather your friends and participate in an important step in the process of building a bike path from Vermont to Connecticut.  It is particularly important that you attend the meetings in your own community but your support is also needed at any public bike path meeting.

Conferences and Political Action

Rumble Strips on Routes 7 and 8

Twenty five plus members of the public met with MassHighway officials and engineers to discuss concerns about the rumble strips installed on Rt 7 and planned for Rt 8 and to present alternative designs that are bike friendly.  Please email peter.niles@state.ma.us,
Luisa.Paiewonsky@MHD.state.ma.us, Benjamin.Downing@state.ma.us, Denis.Guyer@state.ma.us, and david@massbike.org to express you concern and encourage them to support reconsideration of rumble strip installations on Projects #605211 & #605386.  The more people they hear from, the better.  Thanks to Shaun Weigand and Jim Cawse for all their efforts regarding this matter.

Trail Symposium Successful

The Housatonic Heritage Trail Symposium was well attended with representation from the towns and community groups.  Everyone who attended found it informative and the presentation by Mark Jewell was inspiring.  It was also an opportunity to connect with the CT effort and learn about the Blackstone Trail.  We are looking forward to holding another symposium this Spring.
