| Board Meeting Recap |
|
Four new members approved for membership:
Vaughn Real Estate
Lee Claypool
Shane and Anjanette Powers
Lucy Janoush
The Young Leaders Network: The first meeting was a success, with about 25 in attendance. Three have already joined the Chamber and six were already members. A second event is planned for July 2, at The Warehouse.
Marketing and Communications Committee is being formed to oversee the website updates and give feedback for newsletters and email blasts. This committee will also plan and execute ideas to better market the Chamber to the community. Ambassadors: There have been 32 nominations returned. The Ambassadors met on June 1, with about 16 of the prospective Ambassadors. A set of rules and duties were presented to them to review before the next meeting in July. At that meeting, or before, they will be asked if they can commit to the duties required. The steering committee that has been meeting, has decided to do away with the green jacket and replace Ambassador identification with a name pin, which would include the business name, and the Ambassador badge. Basically, all of the duties and rules are the same. Prospective Ambassadors were also asked to think of another name for the program. More decisions will be made at the July meeting.
The Education Committee met on May 14th to discuss plans for the upcoming school year. Several things were discussed such as MESS Kits (Materials & Essential School Supplies) , which will contain notebook paper, pencils, pens, personal hygiene items and other necessities for students. One would be given to each high school to start with parent-organizations being asked to set these up for the remaining schools. County-wide ACT workshops for juniors and seniors, earlier introduction of Chamber Scholars program, expanding Teacher Appreciation week activities, and a Used Uniform Center were other points of concern. After discussing this with Judson, we think there might be a need to expand the committee to include businesses and possibly have an Education Support Committee.
Salute to Industry: This event went well this year with about 185 in attendance.
Pictured above left is Keith Kendall(Cives Steel) receiving the honor for 31 years of business and above right is Joe Janoush(JANTRAN) receiving the honor also for 31 years of business. Both are presented by Cheryl Comans, IDF Chair. |

'Saturdays in the Park' hits homerun with 'Sports Day' CLEVELAND-Basking in near-perfect weather conditions for its second consecutive month, Saturday in the Parks organizers were elated with their turnout for May's "Sports & Sportsmanship" themed-event at East Side Park. "We know our hard work, our planning; it's all paying off, "Dr. John Alvarez offered. "To see so many kids out here this morning, learning new and different sports, being exposed to opportunities many might not otherwise have, receiving sound coaching tips from our area's best and brightest...yes, today is a very good day." Alvarez, Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education & Recreation, spearheaded May's happenings. The day featured tennis instruction, flag football, baseball & softball, soccer, basketball and Ultimate Frisbee. During the lunch hour, both parents and children participated in a interactive dialogue focusing on sportsmanship and ethics. "It's never too young to stress the importance of good sportsmanship, nor is it ever too late to teach what it means to be a good sport," Alvarez added. "We all know playing sports can be fun, but we also want to make sure we remember to treat everybody we play with and against fairly." A collaborative effort between Delta State University's College of Education and its Health, Physical Education & Recreation Department and Division of Family & Consumer Sciences, the Center for Community and Economic Development and the School of Nursing, in cooperation with Cleveland School District, Cleveland Park Commission and the Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness, "Saturdays in the Park" is a free program, offered to all in the community. For more information on "Saturdays in the Park," please contact the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation at (662) 846-4555 or the Cleveland Park Commission at (662) 846-6605. JANTRAN
JANTRAN, Inc. was originally founded in August 1978 as Janoush Marine to function as a shipyard specializing in new towboat construction. The original Board of Directors included Joe Janoush, Brad Janoush, Leland Speakes, Gerald Jacks, Bill Boswell and Brother Wilson. Due to a downturn in the market for new construction, the Janoush brothers decided to concentrate on towing the ever-increasing tonnage on the Arkansas River and bought out the original shareholders of Janoush Marine and founded JANTRAN, Inc. in November 1987. Currently, JANTRAN, Inc. services the Arkansas River from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Rosedale, MS and the Lower Mississippi River from Rosedale, MS to New Orleans, LA with 11 vessels, including the M/V David Work, City of Cleveland, Mary Parker, Leland Speakes and Brother Wilson (all put into service since June 2003). JANTRAN services the Port of Rosedale with four vessels. JANTRAN also has a shipyard located in the Port of Rosedale that is used primarily for repairs and service to its own vessels and equipment. Currently JANTRAN, Inc. employs 240 people. Cives Steel
Cives Steel
Company fabricates structural steel and ductwork for major construction projects. Our primary market area is the Southeast and Southwest but we have shipped our product to California, New Jersey, Alaska, Brazil and Kuwait. Cives employs engineers, draftsmen, estimators, fitters, welders, painters and material handlers. We buy raw material beams, angles and plates and then we cut them, drill holes, fit together, weld together, clean and paint, load out and deliver the specially fabricated pieces. Our scope of work also includes detailing the pieces, designing the connections between pieces and erecting the pieces together at the jobsite. Cives ships by truck and by barge and produces pieces weighing from 100 pounds to 110,000 pounds each.
Quality Steel
Quality Steel was founded in 1957, so we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2007. We manufacture propane tanks for use in domestic, agricultural and small commercial settings. These tanks are manufactured under the specifications established by the ASME Code, which is the international code used for the safe manufacture of pressure vessels. We just successfully completed our tri-annual review by ASME to recertify Quality Steel's use of the ASME Code symbol in manufacturing our products. Quality Steel personnel are primarily responsible for our quality control program and the safe manufacture of our propane tanks. However, in order to ensure ongoing Code compliance, the ASME Code requires that this quality control program be monitored by an independent third-party inspector. Industrial x-ray, radioscopy and hydrostatic testing are just some of the tools used in the quality control process. We ship our product to all of the lower 48 states, but most of our business is found east of the Rockies. We are exploring the possibility of shipping product to Canada. Our customers are primarily persons in the retail propane business. We do not sell to individuals unless they are a licensed propane installer. We employ approximately 95-100 persons during normal economic times, but layoffs during the current recession have reduced our employment to 65 persons. Most of our employees are natives of the Mississippi Delta, and include a number of Delta State graduates.
