Mission Statement
The Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce is organized for the purpose of advancing the civic, commercial, industrial, economic, social, and general interest of the people of Cleveland and Bolivar County. It shall encourage the growth of existing industries and businesses while giving all proper assistance to any new firms or individuals seeking to locate in Cleveland and Bolivar County. This organization will support all those activities believed to be beneficial to the community and the area and will oppose those which might be detrimental. And in general, the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce shall follow always those policies intended to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number.

Sonya Swafford - 10-2 Gayden Metcalf - 10-12 Dr. Macklyn Hubbell - 9 until Helen DeFrance - 10-2 The 40Th annual Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival is pleased to welcome a exciting and diverse group of well-known authors this year. The following authors will be available to sign purchased books: Gayden Metcalf and Charlotte Hayes are the celebrated authors of Being Dead Is No Excuse and Somebody Is Going to Die if Lilly Beth Doesn't Catch That Bouquet: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Hosting the Perfect Wedding. Cleveland's own Beth Jacks hailed their previous works by commenting, "I want Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays at my next pajama party. If those women talk like they write - which I'm guessing they do - their late night conversation would be more fun than a good romp on a tire swing." The Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival is fortunate enough to be their first stop as the begin their book tour for their new, much anticipated book, Someday You'll Thank Me For This which investigates how to be the "perfect" southern mother. Mrs. Metcalf is a lifelong Southerner and one of the founders of the Greenville Arts Council. She lives in Greenville, Mississippi. Ms. Metcalf and Ms. Hayes will be available to sign their new and previously written books from 11am-1pm. Sonya Swafford, Cleveland resident, active community member, and local teacher, begins her published writing career with Sorry, Charlie: A Southern Fish Tale of Fins and Friends. This touching debute story is sure to warm hearts. Terri Routman describes this tale as "...a perfect medium for teaching about tolerance and acceptance. This book is a must for anyone, at any age, to read." Sonya will be available to sign copies of her book from 10 am- 2pm. Helen Defrance, offers a delightful cookbook that will satisfy the entire family. Entitled At Home Café, the Clarion Ledger confirms, "The Viking Culinary Arts Center tested the recipes, so you may follow them with confidence." Helen Puckett DeFrance was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. Helen and her son, Martin, live in Jackson. Helen will be signing her cookbook from 10am-2pm.
Dr. Macklyn Hubbell, beloved community leader, world-traveler, and Baptist minister, always offers selections that makes you want to simply see more of our world. He has written many selections over the years, the most well-known being Food in the Faubourgs about eateries in New Orleans, Who Me? Do What? Go Where? about his missionary work, Outhouse Theology. His most recent titles highlight unique aspects of the Mississippi Delta- its dining and artists. His books always make perfect gifts. Dr. Hubble will be available to sign his books from 9am until.
Father Paul Canonici is the author of The Delta Italians and So Italian. He is a world-traveler and is a well-known authority on Italians in the Mississippi Delta region. We are delighted to have this wonderful man come back to Cleveland to sign his books. Father Canonici will be signing his books with his incredible works of art in a tent nearby.

Schedule of Events Children's Area (Parental supervision is required at all activities) 9:00 - 4:00 Train (NEW) - "All Aboard" Come and take a relaxing ride on this colorful child-sized train. Children will have the opportunity to make a few loops on the "Crosstie Train". $1 per ride 9:00 - 4:00 Sand Area- Children will have the opportunity to kick off their shoes and wiggle their toes in the sand. The sand boxes are always a kid pleaser. They can build sand castles, dig deep holes or just relax in this special place. 9:00 - 4:00 Musical Instruments (NEW) - Bring your children by to make lots of wonderful noise as they bang and shake oversized drums and rain sticks. 9:00 - 4:00 Scavenger Hunt Mask (NEW) - Do you always feel like you have missed a part of Crosstie? Well this year bring your child by to decorate a wonderful mask and provide them with the chance to collect three charms from Crosstie. Children will be given a map of crosstie to find the charms! 9:00 - 11:00 Musical Instruments (NEW) - Music is a great way for children to express themselves! At this stop in the children's area, children will have the chance to make a tambourine or maraca. And to make sure they can hold the right beat, they will have the chance to use their instruments during Mr. Watermelon Heads 2:00 performance. 9:00 - 11:00 Oil Pastels (NEW) - Take a break with your child to create a wonderful work of art to take home. Children can let their creative juices flow as they draw or write with oil pastels on black paper. 9:30 - 12:00 Paper Hats - If you need at have a little shade from the sun or just love to recycle, this hat will be great! 9:30- 10:00 Fun Run - "On Your Mark, Get Set, GO!" Bring your children by to burn some energy in the children's FUN RUN! Registration starts at
9:00. The DSU mascots will be there to cheer all of the runners to victory. 10:00 - 1:00 Book Give Away - Excel by 5 will be hosting a book give away. Please come by to give your child the opportunity to pick out a great book to read at home. 10:-00 - 2:00 Face Painter (NEW) - Bring your child by to have their face painted. Ms. Glenda Harper will transform your child's face into a work of art using washable face paint. $2 per child 10:00 - 4:00 Beads Galore - Need a new accessory? Stop by Beads Galore to make a necklace, bracelet, ring or trinkets out of a variety of beads. 10:00 - 12:00 Delta Arts Alliance Chalk Art Contest (NEW) - The 2009 Festival will feature a sidewalk chalk art contest from 10:00-12:00 noon on South Court Street (between Pearman Avenue and North Bayou). The contest is open to all ages and is sponsored by the Delta Arts Alliance. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., at the intersection of Pearman Avenue and Court Street. Chalk will be provided. Winners from five different age groups will receive scholarships to DAA summer workshops, with an overall winner receiving a cash prize. 11:00 - 2:00 Easel Painting- Let your creative juice flow at the easels! Children can create a masterpiece to take home when they stop by the easels to paint. 1:00 - 4:00 Pinwheel Decorating (NEW) - Bring your children by to create a twirling pinwheel to take home. All they will need is a little creativity and a lot of air! Children's Area Stage (Parental supervision is required at all activities) 9:00- 9:45 Mr. Nick the Magician (NEW) - Come and be amazed by the magic of his show. Mr. Nick engages audiences of all ages with a magical experience you are sure to remember. 10:00 - 11:00 Mr. Watermelon Head - Jump, shake and clap your hands to the music of Mr. Watermelon Head. Children will not be able to sit still as they listen to the wonderful music sung and stories told by Mr. Watermelon Head. 11:00 - 12:00 Storytellers - Come and join DSU elementary education students as they bring multicultural folktales to life. Following the stories art activities will be shared. 12:00 - 1:00 A.W. James Elementary Kristal Bell Choir (NEW) - Come and enjoy as 50 children from A.W. James Elementary Kristal Bell Choir make amazing music with bells. 1:00 - 2:00 Community Drumming Experience (NEW) - Come and enjoy as members from the Cleveland community, and Delta State University students and faculty perform traditional West African rhythms with songs and dances, contemporary African selections, and original pieces. The Community Drumming Experience is led by Dr. Karen Fosheim, DSU Professor of Music. The ensemble will perform and provide a variety of hands-on experience of the drumming and dance for the children. 
2:00 - 3:00 Mr. Watermelon Head - Jump, shake and clap your hands to the music of Mr. Watermelon Head. Children will not be able to sit still as they listen to the wonderful music sung and stories told by Mr. Watermelon Head. During this performance children will have the opportunity to use their instruments they have made in the children's area. 3:00 - 4:00 Crosstie Writers Contest Winners - The Crosstie Writing Contest winners will be reading their entries following the awards ceremony.

The Young Professionals Network has held two meetings and a potential member letter will be going out in the next week or so.
The Ambassadors group met to revamp their image and try to attract new interest.
The State Dental Hygenists' Association met last met in Cleveland at the end of March with approximately 125 in attendance. The Chamber provided gift bags, name tags and a hospitality room. Several stores downtown also extended hours for the events. Linda Hiter, president of the association, was very thankful for the Chamber's contributions.
A Hospitality Committee met March 10, to see how the community could better serve visiting groups like the afformentioned.
The Chamber Scholarship Committee met with guidance counselors and supertindents to discuss the availability and criteria for the 53 scholarships.
Lost Dog Pizza has opened; The Bean Counter was purchased by Rita Rocconi; David Griffith has purchased Tin Roof and changed the name to The Roof; A new business, The Joshua Tree, will open in the old Big Star building.

Come join us for Cleveland's 40th Annual Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival to be held Saturday, April 18, on the lawn of the Bolivar County Courthouse. Things will kick off at 9:00 a.m. and run until 4:00 p.m. and the public is invited free of charge. Artists working in many mediums find a home on the Courthouse lawn and the young and old alike can support the arts in the Mississippi Delta. This year's festival artists include painters Carolyn Norris, Dennis Heckler, Gary Walters, and Adam Miller. Displaying and selling award winning photography will be Will Jacks, Ellen McRaney and Jack Catlette. On hand will also be potters galore, showing off their many different styles - from raku to clay sculptures and stoneware there is sure to be something to fit everyone's style and budget. There will also be a gorgeous array of hand blown and stained glass as well as hand carved furniture!
This year the children will have plenty to see and do at the festival too. There will be a special "hands-on" art area for children. The children can enjoy the sand area, making wonderful noises with the new musical instruments and easel painting. There will be storytelling and a kid's fun run. Also, kids can get some personalized face painting by Ms Glenda Harper better know as Ms Patches. "Mr. Watermelon Head" will make two appearances and the children can enjoy Mr. Nick the Magician. When everybody is worn out jump abroad the new train for a fun filled ride. After catching your breath you may want to participate in the sidewalk chalk art contest sponsored by the Delta Arts Alliance.
The adults will not miss out either - there will be a 5k race where participants can run or walk the route. And, after you've burned some calories, dig into the festival food! All of the best fair fare will be available - funnel cakes, pizza, hamburgers, corn dogs, crawfish, hot tamales and homemade treats will all be there to tempt you!
Writers from Mississippi and the region will also share their uniquely southern pen at the Mississippi Writers Table. Featured writers include: Gayden Metcalf, Charlotte Hayes, Sonya Swafford, Helen Defrance, Dr. Macklyn Hubbell and Father Paul Canonici.
Music is the Delta and there will be plenty to choose from - local groups, jazz and, of course, Delta Blues. MDCC's Ambassadors/Delta Dancers, gospel group the Steadman Brothers and old school R & B group Jake and the Pearl Street Jumpers will all take stage. Other performers include Kristian Dambrino with Barry Bays and Jimmy Jarratt, Amalgamation, Port City Jazz Quartet, Memphississippi Four and Alston Meeks. Other entertainment will be Daves Highway, Bayou Blues, Delta Rox and the Ol' Skool Revue.
Please join us April 18, 2009, in Downtown Cleveland for this year's annual Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival. Bring an appetite, a love of art and, most importantly yourself as we celebrate art in the Mississippi Delta.
