July 2008
Greetings! dj

Did you know that July is "National Recreation and Parks Month" and that there is an actual Parent's Day (July 27th) in July? I think there is a message in there for us!  We (parents) need to get out and enjoy the recreational areas around us. I "googled" CT State Parks and was surprised to find that there are 103 listed, most of which I never knew existed. There has got to be one near you. This summer I hope you get a chance to enjoy a few of them either alone or with your family.
Happy Parent's Day to all you parents!

The 2008 Ride for Rick and 5K

The 5th Annual Ride for Rick is a biking, running or walking tour through scenic Woodbury and surrounding towns, being staged to raise awareness and funds for the Ride for Rick Memorial Fund. DRA is proud to be a corporate sponsor for the second year.  This year the fund will contribute to the Rick Mosian Memorial Scholarship Fund, Connecticut Hospice and KIDSWHOCARE, Inc. which will benefit Watebury families battling cancer and catastrophic illnesses.

Since its inception, the event has raised over $200,000 for local charities, and has grown in size and reputation.  The tour is a tribute to the late Rick Moisan, a local resident who succumed to lung cancer in February of 2005.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2008, begining at 7:00AM for the 50-mile route, at 7:30AM for the 25-mile route, 8:00AM for the 5K run and 8:30AM for the 5 and 10-mile routes.  Rain date is Sunday, September 28th.  In addition to the biking, running and walking events, there are numerous family activities, raffles, refreshments and fun.

"Busting Mammo Myths!"
hyson By Eric Hyson, MD
DRA Radiologist & Chief of Mammography at Waterbury Hospital
Every issue we will take a common myth or misconception concerning mammography or breast health and give you the correct information.  If you have a question that you would like answered please feel free to  contact our office.
"Digital mammography is better than conventional film mammography."  Studies have indicated that digital mammography is a little better than film for women with dense breasts.  For those patients the digital mammogram can better see through the normal dense glandular tissue to detect an underlying cancer.  However, for most women, studies have yet shown any advantage of digital over film.  Most mammograms are still done on film.  However, just as digital cameras have decreased the use of film cameras, the convenience and efficiency of digital mammography will lead to gradual replacement of film mammography.
