Black Lab with Head Tilt Happy Fall to All!
Fall is my favorite season and a great time to get out with your dog before the wild winter winds blow! Not too hot and not too cold, fall is the perfect season for long walks in the shortening days. The dogs at Lucky Dog prefer being outside during this time of year, and when the weather permits we try to accommodate them. It will be cold and snowy soon enough!

Speaking of outdoors, we have been having trouble with our outdoor camera and apologize for the inconvenience. This camera is cranky for some reason, and we hope to get the problem corrected soon.

Please make sure and read our closing block in this Newsletter. We have quite a few events coming up and don't want you to miss anything!

How Much Is That Doggy In the Window?
The True Cost of A Pet Store Pup!

Pet Store Pup
Next time you see one of those cute pet store pups in the mall, do yourself a favor; KEEP WALKING! Here are 10 good reasons to not even think about a pet store doggy purchase:

1. Bad Health - Most common ailments presented to vets from pet store pups are - Neurological, eye problems, hip problems, and parvo virus. I actually new a person who found their pet store Chihuahua pup had only 1/2 it's brain!
2. Behavioral Problems - Due to indiscriminate breeding behavioral problems are passed down from generation to generation.
3. Lack of Socialization - Most bad breeders (and pet stores only use bad breeders) remove the pups at far too young an age, usually 4-5 weeks. Quality breeders know that 8 weeks is the youngest a dog should be taken from it's litter and 10 weeks is preferred.
4. Downfall of Standard - Those who choose to breed their pet store dogs (and far too many do) contribute to the overall downfall of the breed standard.
5. Lack of Information - Clerks in pet stores generally no nothing about dogs, and less about the specific breeds they are selling.
6. Return A Pup Guarantee? - Sounds good, until you realize that most returned pups are immediately euthanized.
7. Housebreaking - After the pup has lived in a cage and pottied on everything in there due to necessity, it may never be housebroken.
8. What You See - Is not necessarily what you get. Your Schnauzer may grow up to look mysteriously similar to a Border Collie.
9. Poor Value - You can pay $400 - $1000 dollars for a dog of questionable background and pay a lot less from a reputable breeder.
10. AKC Papers - Probably fraudulent, and AKC registered does not mean a good representative of the breed.

Buddy
Black Lab with Head Tilt
Buddy Hi! I'm a male  German Shepherd - 5 years old  Like most shepherds, I am a sensitive guy. I get easily attached and I am very protective of my family. I love to go to the dog park at Bear Creek and play in the water. My favorite game is fetch and I am very obedient. I love kids and I get along fine with all other animals. Please research my breed before you consider adopting me to ensure that you know what I am all about!

You can see all the dogs needing forever homes at our website,www.bealuckydog.com click on "Rescue!" If you want to get in touch with any of our adoption counselors dial 719-599-9663 ext. 103. Training With Hand Signals
Hand Signal 2

Most dogs respond beautifully to the use of hand signals combined with verbal cues, while they train. Adding hand signals to your dog's training program has many advantages for both you and your dog.

When dogs are excited they don't listen very well, but can respond to what they see. The hand signal can be seen, and therefore the response to the command may be quicker. When your dog is at a distance he may not hear you, but he can see you from afar. Hand signals are used frequently with hunting dogs so that the hunter may remain quiet, and direct the plan of action to his dog from a distance. Signals are obviously involved when the dog you are training is deaf. The most useful reason for teaching your dog the signals is the crossing of streets, or not crossing if traffic is coming by putting him in a "down/stay."

Prepare to be the envy of your friends! For some reason people are impressed when your dog responds to a signal rather than a voice command. They seem to be amazed that you can command your dog without saying a word!

Be consistent with your signals. If you change your hand motions your dog may not understand what you want from him. So, if you have been working with a trainer and she has been using a certain signal, stick with that signal.

If you are interested in seeing a few of the recommended hand signals see the hand signal link in Quick Links (above.)

Kitty Corner
When Cats "Think Outside the Box!"
Black Lab with Head Tilt Recently, we had a review posted online that was not complimentary to our cat program. Basically it said our cat room stunk. Usually business owners don't talk about a bad review, but there is a story here. "Muck Luck!" No, I didn't just swear at you, and the above name is intended to protect the innocent owner from the frank truth about her cat "Muck Luck." When boarding he is a sprayer, and the client who visited us the day after Muck Luck arrived was the one who said we stunk. AND WE DID!

Cat's refuse to use their boxes for a variety of reasons. It may be a urinary tract infection, he or she may need to be neutered or spayed to stop the "outside the box" action; hormones play a role in this. Sometimes they just don't like the facilities, or (and this was Muck Luck's problem) there are other cats around and the cat is "staking his claim." This is anxiety induced inappropriate elimination and sometimes the hardest to treat.

Inappropriate elimination in cats is the number one reason they are turned over to humane organizations for re-homing. The problem needs to be solved, and it can be. First a trip to the vet, spaying or neutering if needed, the relocation or additon of litter boxes, or the brand of litter used. If the soiling is caused by anxiety and all else fails, two drugs, Buspar and Prozac have been shown to get the cat back on track 90 - 100% of the time.

Back to Muck Luck. He was claiming Lucky Cat as his own because other cats were around. He didn't want to miss out on some prime property! The solution for Muck Luck was going home after his boarding, but a little of him lingered with us for a few days. Finally, after several odor eliminating treatments we had lost the scent of Muck Luck. Until his next visit.
