Happy Fall Y'All!
Fall is a great dog season! The weather is crisp and cool, the thunderstorms have stopped and it's just plain fun to be outside! The dog above seems to be carrying the fun to an extreme....
But winter is coming, and it's time to plan indoor activities with your dog. Lucky Dog offers indoor and outdoor agility training at our South location, and soon Rally Obedience at our Central location. You can watch a video of Rally under Quick Links. Our first Rally-O class will be held on Sept 27 at 1 PM (Central Location).

Announcements!
Bordetella, also known as canine cough, is a common bacterial infection spread via airborne contact. If your dog is breathing he can contract this illness anywhere, anytime from any other dog. We have in the past required the bordetella vaccine every six months. After consulting with our veterinarian we have changed our requirement, and now require the bordetella vaccine yearly. We do recommend that dogs receive the injectable version of the vaccine, although we will accept the intranasal form as a yearly vaccine along with the injectable.
Please remember the canine influenza virus vaccine is due:
1st Vaccine - by September 15
2nd Vaccine - by October 1
Due to distribution problems we will no longer carry Nutra Source dog food. We regret the inconvenience to our clients and recommend Precise, Natural Balance, or Blue Buffalo as an alternative food. Please see the coupon below for 10% off Precise foods.

There Are Angels Amoung Us Disguised As People
A True Story

Our 14-year-old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4-year-old daughter, Meredith, was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to Heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:
Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in Heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to 'God/Heaven'. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to Heaven.
That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed to Meredith in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in Heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in Heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and send it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love, GOD
Dedicated to our friend "Quinn" who crossed the Rainbow Bridge, August 3, 2009.

Focus On The Breed
The Basenji
The Basenji is Known as a barkless dog, although they do make many unusual sounds, none sounding like a bark. This is an alert, affectionate, curious, and energetic breed that makes a good pet if socialized at an early age. Basenjis form strong bonds with their owners and do best with children that know how to display leadership skills. This muscular, strong, and elegant breed was first seen as drawings in Egyptian tombs, and was brought to Europe in 1934. Sometimes called the "Congo Dog," Basenjis are used in Africa as guides in jungles, to warn of approaching wild animals, and is a very active pack hunting dog. The Basenji is a medium sized breed that does well in apartments as long as she gets enough exercise. A smooth coated dog, she may be copper, red, black and tan, or black and brindle, with white feet and/or a white blaze on the face. Wrinkles on her forehead give the Basenji a permanently worried look. This breed's tail is always curled, either over the back or to the side. She has warm, almond shaped eyes. Life expectancy for the Basenji is 10-12 years. This breed washes herself like a cat, has no doggy odor, and sheds very little or not at all. For this reason she makes a good pet for those with mild dog allergies. The Basenji has a great disdain for wet weather, and will go out of her way to stay dry. The most important consideration with a Basenji is activity; they must be exercised daily or behavioral problems may emerge, especially if left alone.
For the activity and stimulation it provides, daycare is a great choice for your Basenji!

Follow up on Darcy's DNA Testing,
The results of my dog Darcy Jo's DNA testing are back, and they are truly bizarre. Although I can appreciate that Darcy may have some of the breeds named in the report in her heritage, Schnauzer was not listed. Anyone familiar with Darcy knows that she not only looks quite a bit like a schnauzer, she also acts like one. So, had the results listed schnauzer with these other breeds I would have more faith in the them . Look at this Face...
Here is what I received back from the DNA lab - Darcy is a:
Pomeranian
Pekingese
Basset Hound
Maltese
English Setter
Basset Hound? Anyway, I chose the winner of our contest by thinking of the most logical choices of breed just by looking at Darcy. So along with Schnauzer Kris Tatryn picked Airedale and Scottish Terrier. Congratulations to Kris and her dog Smokey - they won two free days of daycare or a night of boarding!
Have a Great September!
