Focus On the Breed!
The Bearded Collie
The Bearded Collie is a medium-sized dog that has no trouble keeping up with his cousins, the Border Collie and the standard Collie. Beardies have been used for centuries to heard sheep in the rough Scottish highlands and has retained their stamina, loyalty, and intelligence in contemporary generations.
A prolific shedder, this breed is not a dog for those who shy away from grooming. The Beardie is double coated, with a soft undercoat and a hard, shaggy, top coat. He requires weekly brushing, combing, and dematting.
The male Bearded Collie is approximately 21-22 inches tall and his female counterpart runs slightly smaller at 20-21 inches tall. Weight range is anywhere from 40-55 pounds.
This breed is lean and active, requiring a large area to exercise both inside and outside the house. Dog sports such as flyball and agility are great activities for this breed, and their intelligence level makes them a natural obedience dog.
The Beardie comes a variety of colors; black, blue, brown and fawn, with or without white. They are usually born darker than the color of the adult coat, so a black pup may end up gray.
Life expectancy of a Bearded Collie is 12 to 15 years.

Great Employees!
Brooke Hawks
Brooke has been with us since October of 2007, and is a favorite with our customers at the Lucky Dog Central location. She greets our human clients with a sunny disposition and a lot of dog knowledge!
Brooke has always loved dogs, and had at least four at a time while she was growing up. She has also worked with the 4-H program showing sheep, and handling other livestock.
In her spare time Brooke likes watching football, hiking and biking. She always spends as much time as possible with her dogs, Dewey the dachshund and Richter the pit bull. Brooke thinks that pit bulls are very smart and dachshunds are just soooo cute! She also takes great care of our Lucky Dog Central cat mascots, Olivia and Erin!
Brooke is in charge of the new pet sitting program at Lucky Dog. She will take your pet sitting inquiries, and is also one of our many available visiting pet sitters.
Thanks for being a great employee, Brooke!

Your Dog's Health
Urethral Incontinence
"Really Mom, it's not my fault"
A month ago my 6 year old female schnauzer mix, Darcy, began waking up with a wet bed. Because my three dogs sometimes switch beds at night, I was not sure it was Darcy that was responsible for the wetness. However, one morning I found a mat in my bathroom wet with urine; it was Darcy's favorite resting spot. I was pretty sure I knew what was going on with her, and took her to her vet right away.
After my vet tested her urine to rule out an infection, my suspicions were confirmed. Darcy has urethral incontinence, or "spay incontinence". This condition is characterized by the dog's inability to control urine leakage while asleep or resting. Some dogs also "dribble" urine while they're awake and alert. This is in NO way the dogs fault and it is not a behavioral, but a physical problem. In Darcy's case it was pretty bad, with a large amount of urine released while she slept.
Urethral incontinence may affect as much as 20% of the spayed female dog population, and it usually occurs in older dogs. Since Darcy is only 6 years I thought she was a little young for the condition. However, my vet said he had seen it in very young dogs, sometimes immediately after spaying.
Fortunately spay incontinence is treatable. Two drugs are used alone, or in a combination; phenylpropanolamine and diethylstilbestinol (DES). These drugs help the urethral sphincter to tighten which stops the urine leakage. Darcy's vet preferred the use of DES, one tablet a day for seven days, and once a week thereafter.
Since I wrote this article earlier this month, Darcy has completed her daily medication, and is now on weekly meds. She has stopped having accidents altogether, and has a brand new bed of which she is very proud!

Dear Clients,
Check out our ever growing line of pet foods! Along with Natural Balance we now carry Wellness,Precise and Nutri Source foods. Nutri Source is a great food that is also economical. Now is the time to get your dog off of those supermarket brands and start him on a food that's really good for him! Remember, chronic skin, digestive, dental and other basic health concerns caused by a poor canine diet will cost you a lot more at the vet than you will save buying "bargain brands". Through the end of March, bring in one empty bag of your "supermarket" brand (i.e. Beneful, Iams,Purina) and receive $3.00 off your first bag of Nutri Source (18 pounds or larger)!
See Quicklinks above to visit our web site retail page.
Please bear with us as we increase our retail line and re-arrange our stores in a more "shopper friendly" fashion! New toys will be on the way soon!
Join us for the $8.00 daycare special on March 17th! This is a joint celebration of St Patrick's Day and Lucky Dog's 5th birthday! Debi Ropes-Stevenson
