Treat your best friend to a new collar!
Does your dog's collar look like a relic from World War 2? Do you really want holiday guests to see that collar? If your dog needed a new leash or collar about 6 years ago, check out the coupon at the end of our newsletter. Lucky Dog carries Lupine collars because we feel they're the best, and yes, they really do give you a new one "even if chewed!"
Just for Fun...
Are you the owner of a lovable mutt, or do you know someone who is? Go to www.muttnation.com where you can order a pedigree certificate for your dog, and you get to create the pedigree yourself! Check out some of the unusual mutts discovered by Muttnation such as the Beedle Hound, the Piszer or the Minibunn Terrier (my particular favorite). Purchase a certificate for the mutt lovers on your Christmas list! What's even better is that 70% of the site's net revenue is donated to our local shelters, a direct benefit to homeless dogs in our community.
I have personally created a breed for my schnauzer mix - the rare and highly desirable "schnickerdoodle" known for their ability to steal and eat dozens of cookies in one sitting!

Your Dog's Health
Canine Pancreatitis
As we enter the holidays we can be sure of one thing; most of us will be fatter by the end of the season. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas the average American gains 5 pounds! Unfortunately, Americans tend to use the excuse of a holiday to over feed their dogs as well as themselves. What harm could it do? After all, it is a holiday!
Well, besides the resulting canine weight gain, your could be setting your dog up for a life threatening illness called pancreatitis. Your dog's pancreas has two major functions; metabolizing sugar in the body and producing enzymes that help the body digest fat. If your dog suddenly has a ton of fat to digest from rich holiday foods the result can be an inflammation of the pancreas.
Pancreatitis can be caused by many things, but vets see a lot of dietary induced pancreatitis around the holidays. Greasy food given as a treat or stealing fatty food from the table can set the stage for this condition.
Symptoms of pancreatitis are loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, greasy looking stools and a painful and sometimes distended abdomen. Your vet can use blood work to determine pancreatitis as the probable cause of your dog's illness. Supportive hospital care including IV fluids, withholding food and sometimes antibiotic therapy or pain medication is recommended. For dietary pancreatitis the treatment is usually successful, but needless to say, very expensive!
Pancreatitis is more common in middle aged dogs and females. Schnauzers, Yorkshire terriers and shelties are more prone to pancreatitis than other breeds.
Watch your dog's diet over the holidays. If an extra treat is given, make sure only one person is authorized to provide it. It is best not to give your dog any "people food" at all. There are so many yummy treats made especially for dogs there is no reason to get her pancreas into trouble and ruin everyone's holiday!
Do you know the 3 common drugs you should NEVER give your dog?
1. Aspirin (except buffered with veterinary guidance)
2. Ibuprofen
3. Acetaminophen
Teach Kids the Signs of a Dog That Might Bite!
This is an important lesson. Tell kids that a dog is not happy in their presence if they:
*Put their ears flat on their heads
*Part their lips and/or bare teeth and quiver their mouths
*Hair is up on their backs
* Have a tense and frozen body
*Tail not wagging or moving slowly
*Staring eyes and big pupils
If a dog is with a person children should always ask before petting or approaching the dog.

Cat Boarding at LD South!

We hope to be boarding lucky cats by mid-November. Or beautiful cat condos are almost complete - Thanks Jim!
Health Requirements for boarding cats: *Annual feline distemper (a four or five in one vaccine) *Rabies vaccine as determined by your vet (1 or 3 year)
Please make sure your cat has vaccines at least one week before boarding. We do not require the feline leukemia vaccine, but recommend it if your cat EVER goes outdoors.
Cats must be in good health, free from open wounds or skin infections of any kind. If your cat shows signs of any type of upper respiratory disease he may not board. Cats coming from humane rescue organizations may not board within 30 days of their release. All cats over the age of 4 months must be neutered or spayed to board.
What do I bring for my cat? *His or her own food
*His or her own bed if desired. Lucky cat boarding has beds available at no charge, or a cozy cuddler (warm igloo style covered bed) for an additional $1.00 per day (limited availability).
*Lucky Cat boarding uses clay litter. If your cat uses a special type of litter other than clay, you must bring it with you.
*A favorite toy if desired. Cat nip toys are great and so are ping pong balls and bird feathers. Something like a tee shirt with your scent on it, if you desire.
*Written proof (such as a receipt) from your veterinarian showing the date and type of vaccine your cat received.
*Any medication your cat takes and an explanation on how to administer.
Always have your cat in a carrier, and check in at the front desk before bringing your cat inside. Once checked in, you will be brought in through a door leading directly into the cat room.
Fees: $13.00 - One cat per night $23.00 - Two cats sharing one condo per night $30.00 - Three cats sharing one condo per night *Cats sharing condos must be from the same family.
Each condo is bright and roomy and our cat room is sunny and cheerful!
Special play with laser, fishing pole toys and string toy chase is available for $5.00 per 15 minute interval. Loving attention is free, but extra cuddle time with our "cat lady" can be arranged for $5.00 for 15 minute interval.
"Even overweight, cats instinctively know the cardinal rule: when fat, arrange yourself in slim poses." - John Weitz

Great Employees! James Duckworth
James has worked as a dog guardian at Lucky Dog South since Oct 2007 and soon began working with our trainer, Brian Moore, as an apprentice.
James has two dogs of his own, Atticus a Keeshond mix, and Scarlett a Doberman pinscher. James says that Dobermans are his favorite breed because they are "Intelligent, alert and beautiful!"
James said he likes working at Lucky Dog because he is able to make positive changes in dog's behavior whether it is on the play or training floor. He told us, "I feel good about helping dog owners become more knowledgeable about their dog, and dogs in general".
James worked a lot with his own dogs when he first started training, but he is so busy now it's hard to find time for their obedience work!
Thanks James, for being a GREAT employee!

Goodbye Brittany! Brittany Bates has been working for Lucky Dog Central since 2005. Starting as a dog guardian, Brittany worked her way up to Resort Manager. Recently, Brittany was offered a job in her chosen field of study as an adult disability mentor. We will miss Brittany, but look forward to seeing her for awhile in the afternoon, as she trains our new manager, Ronda Jenkins.
Good Luck Brittany! All your friends at Lucky Dog wish you great success in the future!

For Dogs!
If you're like me, you can't imagine your life without a four-footed furry canine friend. I am a person whose life would not be the same personally or professionally without dogs being on this earth. The multi-million dollar pet retail business is testament to our love of all creatures great and small, and dogs are the number one pet all over the world.
Over the holiday season remember that some of the foods we love can make our dog and cat friends very sick. Stick to treats made especially for dogs and cats, and give them sparingly. Obesity in dogs is on the increase, and with it comes a long list of physical ailments directly related to the problem of excess weight.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
