Your Dog's Health
HemoSolutions-
Your Dog Can Help!
What Is HemoSolutions?
HemoSolutions is a community based volunteer canine and feline blood donation program. Just like people, dogs and cats have diseases or sustain injuries that require blood transfusions. The immediate availability of blood is often the difference between life and death. The difference between HemoSolutions and other blood banks is that HemoSolutions draws its blood supply from healthy dogs and cats living with caring owners. Other blood banks have kennel dogs and cats used solely for the purpose of "harvesting" blood. HemoSolutions believes that the collection of blood products can be obtained in a much more humane and positive manner.
What are the benefits of Becoming a Donor?
The blood screening performed is free to the owner, we just ask that you commit to 6 donations per year (every 6-8 weeks). As a HemoSolutions donor your pet as priority status for HemoSolutions blood products in the event that your dog or cat needs a transfusion. Once the donor has completed 6 donations within a year, the owner can be reimbursed for annual preventative care (depending on the blood type, up to $150 per year). The dog or cat owner has the personal satisfaction of knowing that you and pet have helped other pets in need. One donation can potentially save four canine or feline lives!
What are the criteria for a dog/cat to become a blood donor?
Our donors must be healthy, obedient and even tempered and be between one and eight years of age. Dogs must weigh at least 50 lbs, current on all vaccines, receiving heartworm preventative April through October, and willing to donate a minimum of six times per year.
HemoSolutions is proud to be regular visitors at Lucky Dog Resorts, which enables busy people to have their dog's blood drawn while the dog owner is at work. HemoSolutions will even call you the day before to let you know when we will be visiting Lucky Dog!
Please call for more information regarding cat donations. Visit our web site at www.hemosolutions.com or call 719-380-1900.

Our Trainers Answer Your Questions!
"Wee" Have A Problem!"
My new puppy,"Flower" urinates every time someone comes to the door, or when I get home from work. What causes this, and can anything be done?
First of all, a trip to your vet is called for to make sure "Flower" does not have a urinary tract infection or other illness. We suspect however, that "Flower" is practicing submissive urination when stimulated by visitors, or your return home after an absence. Submissive urination is usually demonstrated by shy, timid dogs, as their way of saying "I am so happy to see you that I just can't contain myself!" Puppies learn to show submissive behaviors at an early age with their mothers and other adult dogs. Other submissive behaviors include rolling onto the back and lack of eye contact with another dog or human. We need to instill confidence in this pup! Things that should not be happening:
Scolding and punishing - This will make matters worse!
Greeting her with a lot of enthusiasm. This is overwhelming to her, even though she loves having you back!
Living in a home with a lot of shouting, arguing and loud noises - not good for anybody.....
Quiet down your household. Refrain from enthusiastic greetings when you get home for about 10 minutes. If she is very submissive, don't even say "hello" for 10 minutes, and then greet her appropriately. This technique must be adhered to by all family members and visitors, and it must be consistently practiced! Praise her when she does well. Just as children respond to positive reinforcement, so do dogs. Deal with misbehavior with the word "No" and redirect her to a different behavior. No yelling, screaming and of course no hitting! Enrolling her in an obedience class or agility is a great way to build her confidence!
If you continue to have problems, please ask your vet and/or trainer for advice. Be patient - accidents may continue for awhile. With positive work and lots of love "Flower" should grow out of this problem. | |

Focus on the Breed
The Pomeranian This lively little fluffy dog is intelligent, eager to learn, and very loyal to her family. The Pomeranian (or Pom for short) has a solid colored coat of either red, orange, white, cream, blue, brown or black. Sometimes the coat is parti-colored (white with colored markings). Her nose may be dark, or the same color as her coat. She has a distinctive feathered tail that fans forward over her back. The Pom's weight should be 3-7 pounds and she should be 7-12 inches tall.
Although a cutie pie, Pomeranians can be willful, bold and temperamental. They are big little dogs that get along well with other animals, when properly introduced. Their Napoleonic tendencies have led many Poms to attack bigger dogs. This breed is not recommended for very young children; they can get nervous and snappish. They are great however, with older children and are wonderful companions for the elderly. The breed's affectionate nature endear it to many, and her vivacity charms even those who do not normally like small dogs. Pomeranians are frequently picky eaters.
The Pom's life expectancy is approximately 15 years. They have few medical problems, the worst of which can be dental problems, which is true for most small dogs. Poms need a daily walk, and those who do not walk their Pom may see some behavior problems. This breed is easy to groom, but the grooming (mostly brushing out of the coat) is time consuming. She is a constant shedder! She should be kept quiet in hot weather to avoid over heating.
Ahhh...the dog days of summer!

Cat Boarding Coming To Lucky Dog South!
You heard us right! Cat boarding is coming to Lucky Dog South! We are in the process of converting our training room (training is now done on the big floors) into a bright and lively cat boarding facility! The home-like atmosphere will board up to 12 cats to begin with and more "cat condos" will be built as needed! These cat condos are being built to our specifications, so we can't yet predict an opening date, however we are estimating sometime around August 15. Stay tuned for updates!

Canine Lonely Hearts Corner
"Walter"
My name is Walter, and I love to play! The picture above says 2003, but it was really only taken a couple of weeks ago. Aren't I a handsome boy? I am 7 years old, and used to have a family, but they can't take care of me any more. I've been waiting for a new forever home for six months, and I'm beginning to get worried that no one will ever want me. I'm very well behaved; I don't dig in the yard, I like to give cats kisses, and I don't counter surf. I chew only my toys and I don't bark much. I will give you a little nudge if I need some petting, and I'm a little nervous about thunder and fireworks, but after some reassurance about the big noise I am just fine! If you think I may be the dog you've been looking for, please contact my friend John at 719-390-7838 or go to www.dreampower.org. Let's meet over a bowl of water and see if we're compatible! Thank you,
Love,
Walter | |

As a thank you...
To all of our clients for putting your trust in Lucky Dog we will begin a new "client rewards" program on August 1, 2008. When you purchase certain services, retail or other selected items from Lucky Dog, you will receive an appropriate "punch" on your client card. Some services are worth $1 punches, some $2 punches or even $3.00 punches. Cards will be held at Lucky Dog, so you don't have to worry about carrying your card around or losing it. Each card is worth $15, which can be redeemed for services or merchandise when all the punches are filled! Each card must be redeemed before another card can be issued.
You will notice new suggestion boxes in the lobby of each Lucky Dog. Please feel free to tell us what we can do to improve our services,or any ideas you may have for new programs at Lucky Dog!

This monthly event will give us an opportunity to say hello, and offer our appreciation for your business. Information on canine related subjects may also be available at this time.
The care of your lucky dog is very important to us. We look forward to seeing you at the monthly morning greeting sessions, hearing your suggestions through our suggestion program, and your participation in the client rewards program!
