Trainer's Corner

The "Ten Commandments" for a Responsible Dog Owner (as dictated by the dog)
1.My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful. Teach me how to be OK with being alone.
2.Place your trust in me-it is crucial to my well being. I can sense when you are stressed, but don't necessarily know why.
3.Give me time to time to understand what you want from me.Train and socialize me to handle your human society.
4.Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I only have you,and I need enrichment.
5.Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do recognize and enjoy your voice when you are speaking to me.
6.Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7.Before you hit me,before you strike, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to crush them.
8.Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been in the sun too long, or I might have a health problem.
9.Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.
10.On that difficult, ultimate journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch, Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.
Enjoy, train, socialize and take good care of your dogs. Life would be much duller,a less joyful thing without our wonderful canine companions!

| Does Cody Hate Me?
or
Why Choose a Dog Daycare With Trainers On Staff?
Debi Ropes-Stevenson, General Manager
Cody never seemed to like me, and I could never figure out why. Cody is a beautiful black Labrador that has been coming to Lucky Dog for a long time. He is a very friendly guy and gets along well with people and dogs, everyone but me that is. Whenever Cody saw me approaching the play area he would lunge and growl at me through the fence with unbridled fury. The dog guardians in the groups would not know what to do, and I would end up avoiding the group area all together when Cody was around, which was frequently. I felt badly - most dogs love me. What had I ever done to Cody? Some dogs are territorial in the play area, but Cody had no problem with anyone walking by but me.
One day I went into the group to help a guardian and forgot about Cody - but he did not miss my arrival. He ran over to me and sunk his teeth into my ankle! His inhibition told me that it was really just a warning, but a strong warning, one I did not dare ignore. If I ever wanted to enter the dog groups without fear of being bitten Cody and I would have to come to an understanding!
I spoke to one of the Lucky Dog trainers, Joey Padilla. He told me to bring the tastiest, most coveted treats in the world to Cody whenever I had a free moment. Eventually, he would learn to associate me with good things. We started with a jar of meat baby food. Joey put Cody into an introduction area, and I fed Cody some of the meat from outside the area. I was a little nervous about my fingers, but the meat was so delicious that he could of cared less who was presenting it. Then Joey had me go into the introduction area with Cody, and gradually hold my hand closer to my body, and then kneel down in front of him. Cody tolerated me pretty well. The next time I used hot dogs, and then Merrick sausages (a HIGHLY desirable treat). Joey then instructed me to treat Cody only when he made eye contact with me, or let me pet him. Soon, Cody was letting me walk by the dog groups without incident, most of the time.
Every once in a dog comes along that has a problem with your very existence. If you try to figure out why it will make you crazy! Is it the way you walk, what you wear, the soap you use? It may be a combination of many things. I will probably never know why Cody did not tolerate my presence well. I do know we are a work in progress and he will still growl and bark at me sometimes. That's when I know we need a "tune up" so off I go for a sausage!
I could have figured out how to desensitize Cody to my presence in the play group area, but with a trainer available, I just asked the expert! The trainers at Lucky Dog are always ready to help our management and staff care for the dogs, and troubleshoot any problems we may be having. That is a great advantage, and one you should look for when choosing a daycare for your dog.
Don't hesitate to contact any one of our trainers with questions! Sometimes the answer to your dog's problem is easier than you think!

Just a Thought.... Our dogs should continue learning all through their lives, just as we humans do. Stimulate your dog mentally and you will help him stay young! Dogs are creatures of habit, and this can lead to a boring day-to-day existence, if you don't help add interest to their lives. Daycare is one way to keep your dog thinking, and improve his social skills, but other things help too. Hide treats around your house for him to find - jackpot! Buy him an interesting new toy such as a "Tug-a-Jug" that presents a challenge - "How do I get the treats out of that jug?" Treats are a wonderful motivation, as are toys, and in the case of my border collie Skye, the highly coveted tennis ball!
"Start training early and keep reinforcing the learning all through the dog's life. You can, and should, teach an old dog new tricks!"
-Victoria Stilwell
