 | SS United States sails into New York in 1952, flying a blue pennant - commemorating her record-breaking maiden voyage and indicating her ownership of the Blue Riband.
|
Dear SS United States Conservancy Supporters:
This fall, we are continuing to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the SS United States' maiden voyage with special events around the nation. These gatherings are extremely important because they help to build public support and raise crucial funds for our campaign to rescue and restore America's flagship.
We hope you can attend some of the exciting events we have planned in New York, Washington, DC and Newport News, Virginia. Read all about them below and please RSVP as soon as possible. We also encourage you to bring along friends, family members or colleagues new to the cause: We must continue to grow our base of supporters.
Also, please help us continue to get the word out about our groundbreaking Save the United States Campaign. Hopefully you have already purchased at least one square inch of the virtual ship. If you have not yet gotten around to it, please visit SaveTheUnitedStates.org - it only costs $1! Through this crucial campaign, we are building a huge online community of supporters. By uploading your images and stories, you will also be helping us create our permanent museum display.
Thank you so much for your steadfast support of the SS United States and for helping us insure that "America's Flagship" inspires and endures for future generations.
Best wishes,
Susan Gibbs
Executive Director

A Blue Riband Evening in Newport News on September 7
| As part of the SS United States Conservancy's 60th Anniversary Celebration Series, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will premier renowned composer Kenneth Fuch's stunning new orchestral composition at the Ferguson Center in Newport News, Virginia on Friday, September 7th. Because "Atlantic Riband" was inspired by the SS United States' record-breaking maiden voyage, the Mariners Museum of Newport News has partnered with the Conservancy to offer concert attendees a very special treat: The 40-foot-long Blue Riband won by the SS United States
on her triumphant maiden voyage will be proudly displayed in the concert hall for the evening.
In partnership with the Hampton Roads chapter of the Steamship Historical Society, the Conservancy is organizing a special pre-concert dinner at the Hampton Yacht Club. Cocktails will begin at 4:30 with dinner at 5:30 to allow time for the group to travel to the Ferguson Center for the 8 pm performance.
For more information about the evening's exciting events and to sign up for the pre-show gathering, please contact Conservancy Advisory Council member Elizabeth Fletcher at efletcher11@cox.net.

Explore the Role of the SS United States' Women Artists and Designers at the Forbes Galleries on October 9th
| | Mira Van Doren, whose work was prominently featured aboard the SS United States, at the opening of the Conservancy's exhibition at New York City's Forbes Galleries.
|
The SS United States Conservancy's fabulous exhibition at the Forbes Galleries in New York City - "The Ocean Liner United States: Celebrating the Past and Future of America's Flagship" - will run through October 20, 2012. If you have not yet visited the display, please be sure to stop by the Galleries on your next trip to Manhattan! Prominent new additions to the display include one of the original wall panels from the "Duck Suite," one of the first-class staterooms favored by frequent United States travelers including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, and Burt Lancaster. Painted in gold leaf by American artist Constance Smith, this stunning aluminum panel is displayed in its own gallery alongside enlargements of period color photography showing life aboard the liner, reproduced from the archive of collector Charles W. Howland.
On Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 6pm, the Conservancy will host a panel discussion, "Designing the SS United States" at the gallery, led by historian Pat Kirkham. The exhibition's curator, Michael Harrison, will also attend. The panel will explore the women artists and designers who contributed to the SS United States.
From the stunning artwork that graced the ship's public rooms to the vessel's revolutionary propeller design, women played key roles in the ship's aesthetic and commercial success. Artists and designers to be featured in the evening's panel discussion include Mira Jedwabnik Van Doren, Hildreth Meiere, and Elaine Kaplan. Please join us!
