Having coached two NFC Championship football teams (the Philadelphia Eagles and the St. Louis Rams, the latter also winning the Super Bowl), Dick Vermeil knows a thing or two about winners. Having seen the ship many times in her current state but well aware of her history and her indomitable spirit, Vermeil donated his time to the Conservancy to star in a Public Service announcement highlighting the importance of saving this ship for future generations. The Conservancy hopes to initially air the spots in New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. You can watch the spot on YouTube - be sure to share the link with your friends!
Media outlets around the country reported on Vermeil's support for the Conservancy, from the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, ABC 17 News, New Jersey Herald, and dozens of other outlets nationwide.

Well-attended SS United States event in Newport News, VA
|
Event organizer Tim Ewing, Conservancy executive director Susan Gibbs and Tim's father Hugh Ewing in Newport News, VA.
The Conservancy would like to thank supporter Tim Ewing for organizing a wonderful event at the Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News, Virginia on May 30. Almost 200 people gathered to hear Conservancy executive director Susan Gibbs discuss the Conservancy's plans to rescue and restore the SS United States. She also showed a short film and shared readings from her grandmother's diaries. Vera Gibbs, wife of William Francis Gibbs, the SS United States' designer, traveled frequently to Newport News during the period of the Big Ship's construction and launch.
Event organizer Tim Ewing presented a "Plank Certificate" to his father, Hugh Ewing, who served on the SS United States' sea trials when he was a young man. He also made a generous donation to the Conservancy in honor of his brother who was a very big fan of the SS United States before his death.
The Daily Press published a wonderful tribute to the SS United States and covered the event. To view the article, click here:
