SS United States

Dear SS United States Conservancy Members and Supporters:

The SS United States Conservancy seeks to raise awareness of our national flagship and works to assure a dignified and sustainable future for the SS United States.  We hope that this great engineering and cultural icon will be given a second life as a vibrant shore-side attraction providing jobs and enjoyment for the people of the United States.

Former CBS anchor Walter Cronkite, Honorary Chair of the Conservancy's Advisory Council, described the vessel's neglect as "a crime against history," and her rehabilitation will be a "restoration of American pride in something it should be very proud of."

Several exciting awareness-raising events have been scheduled this summer - read below for details.  The Conservancy has also established working groups to continue building momentum around our "Save Our Ship" campaign in Philadelphia, New York, Washington, DC, and Miami.  We are pleased to be working closely with the Coalition to Save the SS United States on this initiative.

Please continue to monitor our progress on our blog, and our website.  If you'd like to volunteer for any of these efforts, please contact us at info@ssunitedstatesconservancy.org .

Over the next several months, the Conservancy will be unveiling additional initiatives to help preserve the legacy of the Big U.  The ship remains listed for sail and our level of concern is elevated.  We must all come together now in order to save our national flagship.

As always, thank you so much for your support and enthusiasm.

With our best wishes,

The SS United States Conservancy's Board of Directors

Feature Article Authored by Conservancy Board Member Charles Anderson

The latest issue of the National Maritime Historical Society's Sea History Magazine features an article on the SS United States written by SS United States Conservancy Board Member Charles Anderson, son of John W. Anderson, the SS United States' longest-serving Commodore.  To read the full article, CLICK HERE.

Anderson writes, "Today, the SS United States Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to the ship's restoration, recognizes that saving the ship will take more resources than most individual citizens or non-profits can generate, and is thus aggressively working to establish a government-industry partnership, just as had been done when the ship was originally conceived, to develop a business plan for the ship's future use. National Maritime Historical Society members can play a vital role in this partnership by urging their congressional representatives to support  plans for SS United States' protection and restoration."

Right Angle Club Hosts SS United States Conservancy
Conservancy Vice President Dan McSweeney Addresses Group
The Right Angle Club of Philadelphia recently hosted Conservancy Vice President Dan McSweeney, who discussed the history and current situation of our national flagship during a luncheon meeting.

The Right Angle Club is a group of retired professionals who gather regularly to discuss issues of the day. Based at the Philadelphia Racquet Club, the group was founded in 1922 and includes many prominent residents of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

"It was gratifying to be sharing our message with the members of the Club," said McSweeney. "Several members had actually sailed on the ship and shared their stories of the experience. This is what we need to keep doing in this time of uncertainty with the ship. We need to spread the word far and wide that it's time to come together and save this national treasure."
