How to Save the SS United States for $1.43

How to Save the UNITED STATES for $1.43

The Conservancy recently received a donation from Jim and Judy Ducceschi from Germantown, Ohio, along with the letter below, utilizing one of the most unique and inspiring approaches to charitable giving we've yet to see...

"Enclosed find our check in the amount of $32.89 as our support for your efforts to hopefully recover, save or restore, in some manner, the great SS United States.... In the event that you may be curious about the reasoning and odd amount behind our donation, it really is quite simple.

a) Our chosen charities are few and only those we feel are truly worthy and not just a "charity business."  Some of these include the Mayo Clinic, Salvation Army, and Children's Medical Center. We feel your goal is worthy because this ship represents some of the best that America was, could be, and our hope that it may be again...

b) ...We're using a nominal amount of our government "stimulus" windfall money that we didn't ask for or need and donating it to your worthy cause in lieu of our government's intended use of just spending it on more "stuff" to "help" our ridiculous economy.

c) We estimate there are presently approximately 350 million Americans and we heard that the estimate to restore this great ship might be as high as $500 million.  That represents just $1.43 from every true American that appreciates the American greatness this ship
represents.  We are donating that amount for ourselves, each of our 5 children, their 4 spouses, and our 12 grandchildren, or 23 x $1.43 = $32.89.  We sincerely hope this donation helps you achieve your goal.

May God bless the future of the SS United States and America!"

Dear SS United States Supporter,

In the wake of Star Cruises' announcement that our nation's flagship will not be sold to a non-U.S. entity or to a scrap dealer, the Conservancy continues to work "all hands on deck," well aware that these terms of sale merely provide Our Ship a temporary stay of execution.  To that end, we continue to spread the word about the SS United States in the media, and are working with the Coalition to Save the SS United States on business development and strategic planning.  As always, we welcome your involvement, suggestions, and support... please don't hesitate to contact us!
Steven B. UjifusaSteven B. Ujifusa Joins Conservancy Board

The SS United States Conservancy is pleased to announce that author Steven B. Ujifusa has joined our board of directors.  Steve has been fascinated with ships and the sea since childhood, when his grandmother told him about her travels aboard the great liners.  He is currently working on a book tentatively titled The Ideal Ship: America's Greatest Naval Architect and the Quest for the SS United States, to be published by Twelve Books in 2010. Steven has written numerous articles on architectural history and city planning for PlanPhilly.com, including several about the SS United States.  He has also done historical consulting work for the Philadelphia Department of Records and other clients.   He received his B.A. in history from Harvard University and his masters from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.  A native of New York, he now lives in Philadelphia, where he enjoys music and rowing.  He was appointed to the Conservancy board in March 2009.

The Conservancy welcomes Steve aboard!

The Cruise Agency
The Cruise Agency Joins the Cause

The SS United States Conservancy is delighted and honored to announce that Philadelphia-based The Cruise Agency has joined Just Cruises Plus in supporting the cause of saving the SS United States.  The Cruise Agency is America's first all-cruise travel agency and has been in business for 27 years, representing every major cruise line, with a special expertise in cruises departing from Philadelphia and the northeast United States.  We were recently contacted by the agency's owner, Dave Bilardi, who made the following generous offer:

Under the new SS United States Preferred Pricing Plan, customers who mention that they are a Conservancy member when calling to book their cruise will receive special savings on each cabin booked.  The savings will vary according to the ship and stateroom category.  Credit can be applied toward your deposit or can be used as an onboard credit.  Once you've completed your cruise, a contribution will be made by The Cruise Agency to the SS United States Conservancy to help fund the Conservancy's ongoing efforts to save our nation's flagship and preserve her legacy.

To explore cruising options and learn about deep discounts on special cruising itineraries, contact the The Cruise Agency at 1-800-257-SHIP (7447) or via email at dave@bestcruiseagency.com.  You can also visit the Agency's website.

The Conservancy is deeply grateful for this outpouring of support!
Please mark your calendars for our annual meeting on May 23, 2009, in New York City at the South Street Seaport Museum.  Registration information will be available shortly.  This special symposium will feature a number of intriguing presentations about the SS United States' history from some of the world's leading maritime experts as well as from people who worked aboard the ship.  We will also unveil the Conservancy's new Advisory Council and show a special screening of "SS United States: Lady in Waiting," accompanied by remarks and updates from the film's producer, Mark Perry.

While we hope you can join us for this special event in New York, you can also help us from your own home computer.  If you have a website, a MySpace, FaceBook or Twitter page, please post a link to the Conservancy:

And be sure to visit our website to find other ways you can help.  Please take a few seconds to sign our online petition to Save Our Ship.  PLEASE NOTE: it has been brought to our attention that there is a "DONATE" button on the iPetition.  This is to make a donation to support the iPetition website, NOT to contribute to the campaign to save our national flagship.

We thank you for your support of the SS United States!

Sincerely,

Board of Directors
