Update January 21, 2009
Dear Friend of the SS United States,

Happy New Year and a hearty welcome to all of the SS United States Conservancy's new members and supporters!

As we usher in 2009, the SS United States Conservancy affirms our continued commitment to preserving the legacy of the SS United States, our nation's flagship.  Now that the documentary film "SS United States: Lady in Waiting" has been aired on television stations nationwide, public awareness of the Big U has grown by leaps and bounds.  While the current global economic downturn poses new challenges for the ship's restoration and return to seagoing service, we continue to work as hard as we can to publicize the ship's historic importance and future potential.  In the event that a return to seagoing service does not prove viable, we heartily support the prospect of establishing the ship as a stationary attraction in a major U.S. city.  The restoration of the glorious SS United States would provide not only an economic stimulus but a resurgence of national pride.  As we begin a new era characterized by a renewed sense of shared responsibility for our public life, we hope you'll join us in our effort to save our ship of state.  We welcome your support, participation and enthusiasm as we advance this mission in the coming year.

Conservancy Annual Meeting Scheduled in the Big Apple!
SSUSC 2009 CalendarThe SS United States Conservancy's 2009 Annual meeting will take place in New York City on Saturday, May 23.  We are thrilled to be partnering with the South Street Seaport Museum in offering an exciting and informative program.  The Museum has an extraordinary maritime collection in support of its mission to preserve and interpret the history of the Port of New York, including the Ambrose Lightship, the official starting point of the SS United States' record-breaking maiden voyage in 1952.  Museum visitors can board the Ambrose Lightship and view an exhibition of photographs, charts, and artifacts on navigation and the role of lightships.   More information about the Conservancy's meeting plans will be released shortly, but for now, please mark your calendars!  (For more information about the South Street Seaport Museum, see www.southstreetseaportmuseum.org.)

SS United States: Lady in Waiting Available on DVD
The SS United States Conservancy and Big Ship Films, LLC are very excited to announce that our documentary, SS United States: Lady in Waiting, can be ordered through Choices, Inc., a Los Angeles based distributor of documentaries, educational films, and other motion picture entertainment.  The DVD may now be purchased directly through www.choicesvideo.net or by calling 1-888-570-5400.  With re-designed packaging, the DVD is also currently being offered on Amazon.com and other outlets.  Choices, Inc. specializes in supplying films to schools, libraries, museum gift shops, retail stores, and through catalog and online sales.  "The agreement will vastly expand our outreach by making the film more readily available to people just browsing the internet or the aisles of their local video store," said Mark Perry, the film's producer.  Choices will also offer a special classroom curriculum related to the ship and the film, and the SS United States Conservancy, along with noted author and educator Elizabeth Fletcher, are collaborating in the development of these materials.
