Update November 4, 2008
Dear Friend of the SS United States,

On this historic election day, the SS United States Conservancy is pleased to bring you the following update.

Conservancy Honored with SSHSA C. Bradford Mitchell Award

C. Bradford Mitchell Plaque On Saturday, November 1, 2008, the SS United States Conservancy was honored to receive the prestigious C. Bradford Mitchell Award from the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA).  At the Southern California Chapter's annual semi-formal tea and social, the SSHSA's Chris Butler presented the award to Mark Perry, producer of SS United States: Lady in Waiting.  Mark accepted the award on behalf of the Conservancy and Robert Radler, director of this ground-breaking documentary, and thanked the Society as well as all of those who worked to make the film a reality.  Mark also updated those in attendance about the current status of the film (see below).  The plaque reads: "2008 C. Bradford Mitchell Achievement Award is presented to The SS United States Conservancy in appreciation of their efforts to maintain the heritage of America's greatest Trans-Atlantic Ocean Liner, the SS United States, and the production of the documentary SS United States: Lady in Waiting."  The SS United States Conservancy is deeply honored to accept this award.

Lady in Waiting Goes International!

Lady in Waiting Choices PackageBig Ship Films, LLC and the SS United States Conservancy have been working hard to expand our outreach and tell the story of the SS United States both domestically and internationally.  Recently, Big Ship Films completed a deal with Choices Video to distribute the DVD of this award-winning documentary domestically.  Choices has already listed the film on Amazon.com among other sites, and is offering the film in trade catalogs, museums, libraries, and Netflix.  Big Ship Films is now in final negotiations with an international television distributor to begin marketing both the film and the DVD worldwide.  As soon as this deal has been finalized, we'll announce the particulars so that international fans of the ship may order the DVD or look for the film to air in their area.

Lady in Waiting Screening aboard Queen Elizabeth 2

SS United States Conservancy Board member Greg Norris presented a screening of the documentary film SS United States: Lady in Waiting aboard the Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 on October 19 during the ship's final transatlantic voyage.  Several hundred people were in attendance.  The SS United States and the Queen Elizabeth 2 had overlapping service careers from May until November, 1969 and shared the common bond of being their nation's ships of state.  Steven Payne, chief naval architect for the Cunard Line, was presented with a copy of Lady in Waiting and expressed his appreciation and support.

SS United States Conservancy Board member Richard Rabbett spotted a familiar engine order telegraph adorning a mural in the Queen Elizabeth 2's mid-ship lobby!
