Dear Members and Supporters:

Happy New Year!  We realize that it has been some time since you have heard from us, but we would like to assure you that we have been hard at work raising public awareness about the SS United States and fighting for the ship's preservation and restoration.  We have an exciting roster of activities slated for 2008 and hope to see you at one of this year's events!

SS United States Documentary to Premiere on Public Television
Watch for Local Listings

American Public Television has officially accepted "SS United States: Lady in Waiting" which is set to begin airing nationwide this spring.  WTTW National Productions, the award-winning PBS affiliate in Chicago, signed an agreement with Big Ship Films, LLC in October of 2007 to present the original one-hour high definition documentary profiling the once iconic 20th century ocean liner.  This groundbreaking film is being produced by Big Ship Films in cooperation with the SS United States Conservancy, and will be available on DVD (with bonus material) in conjunction with its public television premiere.   To learn more about this exciting film and view a short trailer, visit Big Ship Films.

SS United States Exhibit Ready to Board RMS Queen Mary
Stay Tuned for Details on Launch Event!

 Queen Mary Funnels
The SS United States Conservancy's long-awaited exhibit aboard the RMS Queen Mary will be installed in February, 2008.  The exhibit, part of the Queen Mary's "Rivals and Running Mates" gallery, will feature exciting images, informative text and vintage memorabilia.  The SS United States captured the fabled Blue Riband from the Queen Mary, so it is only fitting that she be honored aboard her former rival.  The RMS Queen Mary is permanently moored in Long Beach, California and offers a wonderful lodging alternative for visitors to the Los Angeles area.  For more information about the RMS Queen Mary, visit their website.
Conservancy to Replace Sign at Pier 82

Philly Sign in 2004

The sign at Pier 82 informing visitors to Philadelphia about the SS United States was recently destroyed by the elements.  We are actively working to have a new, more weather-resistant replacement made and installed.  We'd like to thank Norwegian Cruise Line, owners of the SS United States, for their generous support of the sign's refurbishment.
Information for Documentary Needed - A Note From Big Ship Films

SS United States Album Cover The Documentary Team has been working with researchers to track down the company or persons who now control the rights to the master recordings of the 1959 Everest Records Release, "Let's Dance On Board the SS United States," a recording of the ship's orchestra under the baton of Alfred Menconi.  Unfortunately, the Everest catalog has been sold off and scattered to various owners, and every clue has lead to a dead end.  Because of arcane copyright laws, this marvelous music may have to be excluded from the broadcasts of "Lady in Waiting" if we cannot locate this entity.  If you have any information, please email bigshipfilms@gmail.com.  Thanks!
