We know that there are a lot of you looking for info on the newest version of our R.I.P. 9.

Whether you are building a bike for the tech of the Pacific Northwest, for the rocky chunder of the desert or for alpine singletrack flow, this evolved version of the R.I.P. 9 gives you the flexibility you want. The R.I.P. 9 now comes stock with a one degree slacker headangle and standard internal ZS headset and a head angle of 70.5º (120mm fork) to 69.5º (140mm fork). With an upgrade to an aftermarket Cane Creek Angleset you can either achieve even steeper or slacker angles, giving you a range from 72º (with 120mm fork) to 68º (with 140mm fork)*. This makes the evolved R.I.P. 9 our most versatile frame yet - perfect for dialing in to best fit your local trails.

The R.I.P. 9  is Niner's go anywhere / do anything machine, especially when kitted out with one of our curated 29er specific build kits. These bikes are available for order from your Niner dealer and come in a great range of colors (Raw, Hot Tamale and Black Anodized).

For complete geometry details see the Niner Encyclopedia. The R.I.P. 9 is available for $1799.99 MSRP from your Niner dealer.

We get a lot of questions from riders who are seeking more information about headsets and headset standards, and why Niner has opted to evolve the full suspension frames to one standard and the hard tail frames to another. Now that our R.I.P. 9 with the tapered ZS standard is almost ready, we want to get a little more info out there:

FULL SUSPENSION

Niner full suspension frames (Jet 9, R.I.P. 9, W.F.O. 9) will now have headtubes designed for the tapered ZS (zero stack) headset standard. The ZS standard uses low-profile press in cups and allows multiple customization options that gives Niner riders the flexibility they have requested for our full suspension frames.

Stock geometry can be manipulated by replacing the lower zero-stack cup with an external traditional 1.5" cup, which raises front-end height, slackens head angle by .5 degree and raises the bottom bracket by 1/4". The ZS standard also permits use of Cane Creek's Angleset*, a headset that allows riders to increase or decrease the stock head angle by 1 or 1.5 degrees without seriously impacting other geometry numbers.

HARDTAIL

The Air 9 Carbon will continue to use an integrated headset because it's the lightest, sleekest and simplest system available. It's the best solution when performance is the most important goal. Weight savings of approximately 25g, durability and easy installation make it an enduring Niner favorite.

All tapered headtube Niner hardtail frames will be shipped with a headset configured for a tapered 1-1/8" x 1-1/2" fork steerer. A traditional straight 1-1/8" fork steerer can be used by simply replacing one or two headset parts.

* Note: angleset requires use of straight steerer 1 1/8" fork.

Greg, Kyle, Brett, Mike and Tim all traveled to Singlespeed Arizona 2011 this past week, and we got some great shots from photographer Devon Balet.

So what was great about SSAZ 11? Let's count the ways:

1. Lots of friends. Not only did we have a good chunk of the Niner staff present, but we also saw friends from Mountain Flyer Magazine, George from Bike29 and Topher from Bike Sport (making a good effort at joining the Niner Factory team, see below).

2. Great riding. The SSAZ course continues to be one of the toughest prettiest singlespeed events out there. Our own Dejay Birtch organizes the ride, and he designed the course to be challenging and fun. With everything from an 8 mile climb to start, a "tequila tree" and some crazy descending, the course offered a bit of something for everyone.

3. Giving back. As quoted in Mountain Flyer Magazine, when asked why he puts Singlespeed Arizona together every year, Dejay said "I spend most of my year traveling around to other people's events. Mountain biking in general, single speeding in particular, brings me happiness, joy and greatness. I just want to give back to everyone else that wants to experience that as well."
We at Niner are stoked to have someone who loves the sport so much on our team!

4. Slacker shots. Everyone that signed up late had to start the race with a shot of tequila.

5. Tim won! Our own Tim Allen, of the Niner Stan's Ergon team won the race on his tang Air 9 Carbon, and had a ton of fun doing it. Tim's been mixing things up a bit this year with his training, and it looks to be paying off. For more details you can read a great race recap here.

6. Great riding before and after. In addition to the main event, there was great riding to be had around Tucson, on both single speeds and geared bikes, such as Dejay's Jet 9. Devon Balet captured some of that action, too, see below.

For more, you can keep tabs on our team and staff via the Niner Bikes Facebook page and via the Niner Stan's Ergon team website.

>> NINER EMPLOYEE FEATURE: MIKE GANN
Mike!

We have a great crew of people who work to bring Niner Bikes to the world, and as a part of expanding the Niner community, we thought we would start making some introductions:

Introducing Mike Gann.

As Niner grows, we have found a need for a guy who can herd all the cats, and have found that fellow in Mike, our new head of operations. He has years of experience helping small companies to make great bikes and we are stoked to welcome him on board.

When he isn't hanging out with the rest of the Fort Collins staff, Mike spends his time with his family and out exploring the trails around their new hometown. When asked what trail was his favorite so far, we got "Anything that isn't my trainer in my basement". Mike, I think that every northern rider can agree with you there :-)

Mike has been racing and riding bikes for years, was a pro on the road in the early 90s and even though he no longer turns pedals in anger, is still a great guy to ask for advice and set up info. When asked for his favorite bit of bike advice, he said, "ride, wash, repeat". A clean bike is a lot more likely to be a functioning bike!

>> GREENWAY BIKESHOP, OCALA, FL

Greenway Bike Shop is spreading the Niner love in Ocala, Florida. Founded by Jess and Dano Kinnee, Greenway has fast become an Ocala pillar through their work membership in Florida Freewheelers, IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association), OMBA (Ocala Mountain Bike Association), Gone Riding Races, Red Trail Racing, Meetup Mountain Bike Groups, Orlando Bike-0-Psychos, and the MS 150 Bike Tour.

Dano is not only an avid 29er evangelist and racer, he is also a certifed USACycling bicycle mechanic and DT Swiss-Certified wheel builder. You can trust that your baby is getting great care in his shop.

Personally, Dano owns a Niner E.M.D. 9, and hardtails are the focus of the Greenway demo fleet as well - schedule your ride on an E.M.D. 9 or M.C.R. 9 now, and there are plans to significantly expand demo options in the near future.

Finally, Greenway is the location of the first stop on our 2011 Demo Tour with Stan's No Tubes and Ergon. Niner will have a fleet of bikes available for testing on February 18 - details and location can be found here.
