Our racers have been really busy all spring and into the summer!
Our youngest rider, Skyler, is traveling in Europe to a lot of races, including some World Cup events. We are really excited to have him flying the Niner flag over there and wish him the best of luck.
Tim is doing the
Mountain State Cups in Colorado along with the weekly short tracks in Boulder. He has had a few great results so far, including a recent top 10 at the Teva Games!
Dejay just did the
Baily Hundo and is using it to benefit Trips for Kids and will be racing in Colorado for the next month, including at Marathon and XC Nats.
After a spring of nagging hamstring injuries, Rebecca is now well into training for her first Xterra. We are really excited to have Niner in the transition zone! Good luck, Rebecca!
Finally, have you been racing? We don't always get a chance to hear about all the Niner riders racing around the world. We would love it if you posted your race results on our Facebook page!

>> CVA™ - NINER'S PROPRIETARY SUSPENSION DESIGN
|
|
Good designs come
from straightforward ideas. Our goal here is to help explain the
design behind CVA™ while keeping it as simple as possible to give you an
understanding of your new bike.
CVA™ stands for Constantly Varying Arc - Niner's own suspension design.
POWER EFFICIENCY The goal of a good
suspension design is to separate the suspension action from the pedaling action.
This way the power produced by your legs won't affect the suspension
movement and vice versa. This keeps the pedaling smooth and efficient while
climbing and the bump absorption active and engaged for when you need it. Leg
power moves the bike forward, while terrain changes affect the rear wheel to
move the suspension creating a smooth ride.
ELIMINATION OF CHAIN GROWTH
When evaluating suspension, we first consider the axle path that the rear wheel travels on. In CVA, the main design goal is to eliminate almost all chain growth as the suspension moves through its travel. What is chain growth? This is when the rear wheel moves farther away from the bottom bracket as it rotates through the suspension travel. This path effectively 'stretches' the chain causing it to pull back on the crank and therefore your pedals. This is also known as 'pedal kick-back'. In designs where chain growth is more prevalent, the rider either feels a torque on the cranks that they have to overcome in order to pedal, or the suspension has to push through the rider's torque on the pedals in order to move - neither of which is advantageous to an efficient suspension system. The real world effect of eliminating chain growth is felt at the pedals, or more importantly NOT felt at the pedals, especially with CVA™. The lack of chain growth on CVA™ suspension designs means that the suspension system is both completely active under full pedal power and the pedals are completely independent of suspension movement. This translates into better small bump compliance and a fully active suspension system, even while climbing.
PIVOT PLACEMENT
CVA's pivot placement is key to functionality. By locating the pivots above and
below the bottom bracket, the suspension remains solid under power removing any
of the pedal induced "bobbing" motion that occur in some designs. This
helps to keep the suspension movement and chain torque separate.
Think of these pivots as the feet of an open a-frame style ladder. As the power is applied to the cranks the chain torque is effectively
trying to pull the upper and lower linkage apart. The solid rear triangle with
hydroformed brace holds them in check. The power then efficiently transfers to the
rear wheel and propels you forward. At the same time, the suspension stays active to soak
up bumps in the trail. CVA™ suspension works
effectively in all three chainrings.
RIDE QUALITY
When it comes right down to it, it's all about the ride. Acronyms are fun, but we know our job is done right when design and
engineering combine to produce an experience that exceeds the sum of the parts. CVA™ not only works on paper, but it has reviewed incredibly well. Check out the reviews of our CVA™ bikes - the Jet 9, R.I.P. 9 and W.F.O. 9.
Mountain Bike Action
Niner R.I.P. 9 (2009) 9 von 10 Punkten, BIKE Dauertest 4/2010 / Niner R.I.P. 9 rated 9 out of 10 points by Bike Magazine, Germany.
KEY CVA™ SUSPENSION POINTS:
- Works effectively in all three chainrings - Separates chain torque from suspension movement - Minimal chain growth throughout full range of suspension movement - Pivot placement key to solid efficient pedaling - Well reviewed, helping to prove that the ride is key - No mechanical lock out or pedaling platforms necessary - Efficient separation from brake force as well as pedaling force

>> STEPS TO GREEN MANUFACTURING
While our goal is to make the best 29ers on the market, in the
back of our heads we are always thinking about ways to lessen the impact on the
environment. We are encouraged that our manufacturing partner in Taiwan has
these same goals in mind. From a grey water system that recycles rainwater,
more use of wind powered electricity to a new factory paint booth that greatly
reduces energy used in the drying process (see above). We are encouraged to work with
companies that are doing their best to make a difference around the world.
Every little bit helps and we are always keeping our eyes open for future
opportunities to make a difference.

We have a great crew of people who work to bring Niner Bikes to the world, and as a part of expanding the Niner community, we thought we would start making some introductions:
Introducing Mike Stanley.
Our East Coast Sales Manager, is a non-stop ball of energy. When he isn't visiting Niner dealers, he is racing his Niner and running Niner Demos. His favorite part of the job is when riding great trails IS his job.
You can find Mike in a lot of places, but if he is on his favorite trail you must be in Clemson, South Carolina (he loves the Issaqueena Trails), with Disturbed on the iPod. He also really loved the Singlespeed USA event in Arizona this year, and plans to ride those trails again, someday!
Finally, when asked for the best bike advice he could
give, Mike said "Buy a torque wrench and use it!" We can definitely get behind those sage words.

>> FREEWHEELER, GRAND RAPIDS, MI
Freewheeler was first opened
in 1978 by an 18 year old punk BMX rider named Gordy Bryan, since then Freewheeler
has continued to grow. In the beginning BMX was the focal point, but now it's
anything bike related that can be found here. We pride ourselves in being a
shop run by a bunch of everyday guys. Customer service and a laid back
attitude is the atmosphere here. It's simple, if the customers are happy we're
happy.
So far this year the 29er
madness has really hit us hard, for our terrain here in West Michigan nothing
beats it. With Niner Bikes it's cool because we sell what we all ride here at
the shop. The Niner following here is great and we're excited to be a part of
it. Our demo bikes have been out weekly and the riders all come back with that
same smile on their face!
