>> R.I.P. 9: THE FRAME FOR RIDERS WHO WANT IT ALL

RIP

"If you're looking for something that can tackle pretty
much any trail
and accommodate any riding style,
the R.I.P. 9 should be on your short list."

-Bike Rumor

Gear of the Year
-Mountain Bike Magazine

This is the first bike we've ridden that comes anywhere close to truly being an all in one bike...We have yet to ride a 26" bike that can match the level of uphill and downhill performance the R.I.P. 9 offers. For all mountain trail riding and just having fun on a bike the R.I.P. 9 can not be beat."
-Mountain Biking Magazine

The R.I.P. 9 is the Niner for folks who want one bike that goes everywhere. Whether you want to race some XC or take a dream trip to Moab, the R.I.P. 9 is the bike that comes through with flying colors, no matter what the test.

The tapered headtube gives you better steering precision and contributes to better energy transfer, great for an uphill tech challenge and for that fast descent you look forward to on your favorite ride. The C.V.A. suspension climbs beautifully and saves your energy for the sprint.

Check out the many glowing reviews of the R.I.P. 9, including a 9/10 point score from Bike Magazine, Germany, one of the toughest bike critics in the industry today.

>> TAPERED HEADTUBES - BETTER TECH FOR BIKES FROM XC TO FREERIDE

tapered headtube

You might have noticed the headtubes on the new Jet 9, R.I.P. 9 and W.F.O. 9 recently as well as the upcoming Air 9 Carbon hardtail. The large imposing shape they cut is far more than just for looks alone. When paired with a tapered steerer tube fork you get the optimum setup for strength and handling precision for today's mountain bike rider.

The main advantage of the tapered headtube is the taper itself. The real magic comes from the 1 ½ inch diameter lower section. By using an oversized lower cartridge bearing and lower steerer tube setup you can increase the overall strength and stiffness of the front end, giving you a stronger and better handling bike. The larger diameter lower allows you to reduce the wall thickness of the steerer tube, which reduces weight while upping the strength in the areas most affected by braking and riding forces - the fork and head tube. This is especially true when you consider the longer 29er fork as a lever arm - you would see those forces mainly focused at the lower head tube area.

You could accomplish the above with a traditional 1-1/2" standard steerer, but the tapered steerer offers significant weight savings over this option, with almost all of the same advantages as well as enabling the continued use of standard threadless stems, of which there are a large variety of lengths and models available.

In the manufacturing process Niner's full-suspension frame headtubes start with 6000 series aluminum which is precisely spun on a CNC lathe into its final form. This prepares the head tube bearing "shelf" for our standard easy-to-use drop in integrated headset and allows for the tighter tolerances needed for this integrated headset use. Additonally, this beefier headtube has a larger purchase area, which means that we can weld a larger, stronger downtube into the frame. The same relationship applies to the frame down tube/head tube junction as it does to the fork/lower head tube junction. With the greatest stress being focused in these areas it allows Niner to build a stronger frame that is noticeably stiffer and handles better on the trail.

Don't let the bad-ass all-mountain look of the rugged tapered head tube fool you though. It has as many benefits for XC riders as it does for folks on more aggressive trails. The hydroformed "spine" of the headtube plus the bigger downtube helps to make bikes like the R.I.P. 9 the most versatile bike in the Niner line-up. You will find the stiffness needed for solid power transfer that is demanded in cross-country type riding as well as the solid confidence needed in technical, rocky sections so you are ready for anything that comes your way on the trail. That taper head tube will definitely tell others you are ready for anything when you hit the trails.

TAPER STEERER BENEFITS:

· Precision steering improves downhill and technical handling
· Offers better power transfer great for both XC and freeride athletes
· Stronger frame without a real weight penalty
· Allows the use of standard 1-1/8" stems

>>MIKE BUSCH:  COOKIE FIEND

Mike

We have a great crew of people who work to bring Niner Bikes to the world, and as a part of expanding the Niner community, we thought we would start making some introductions:

Introducing Mike Busch (whose riding has improved significantly since he moved to bigger wheels, see above).

Our Materials Engineer & Quality Control Manager, Mike "Cookie Monster" Busch is a man of the outdoors. He spends as much time as he can climbing, canyoneering, camping and of course, riding. Mike worked at a number of bike shops in the area while he was growing up in Ventura, Calif.  and during his days at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Mike has many talents - including the ability to change his pants while riding. Feel free to ask him how next time you see him at an event.

The best bike advice Mike could give is to overhaul your suspension more than you think you should. "It will help the suspension last longer and keep the bike working as it is intended".

A perfect day of riding for Mike would be on the trails around Santa Barbara, in particular Romero, followed by a big plate full of fresh baked cookies. Num num num num num.Get to know the rest of Niner here.

>> TRAILS FOR YOUTH AND A NEW NINER FOR A GREAT KID!

At Niner we love to see groups that support mountain biking, helping to get more young adults on the trails and connecting with the outdoors. We recently got a wonderful message from the Trails for Youth group in the Washington DC area. It sounds like they have helped to build a rider for life. We applaud their efforts. Keep up the great work and thanks for letting us be a small part of a great story and sharing your email!

Yorshua Aguilar  is a 13 year old boy who has been participating in our mountain bike program for about three years.  His parents both work several  jobs each so many of our volunteers have taken him under their wing providing him transportation to and from rides. Yorshua had an accident at the end of last year's riding season that kept him from riding for several months. The bike we we're providing him was damaged during the accident as well.  During the winter period Yorshua grew about 4 inches so we decided to build him a dedicated new bike using a new large Niner E.M.D. 9 frame provided to us by Filz Built Bikes.  The Bike Lane (another Niner dealer and TrailsforYouth.org sponsor) overhauled a Reba suspension fork for the bike with the remainder of the parts on the bike donated by staff and volunteers.

During our spring break camp, where we provide opportunity for 22 youth to experience the joys of cycling, hiking and rowing then have an adventure race on the last day - Yorshua was presented with the bike and rode it all week.  He is now riding it weekly with us and is the sole occupant (other than myself when he isn't looking) of the bike.

TrailsforYouth.Org is a regional program in the Washington DC area that provides opportunities for children to get outside and exercise while learning important life lessons.  Our motto is "teaching kids to overcome obstacles on the trail and in life."  We operate safe routes to school programs in 10 elementary schools in the area, as well as run three Trips-for-Kids chapters and a seven race youth mountain bike series in Northern Virginia.  In addition we partner with the national park service on several important initiatives including our educational bike tours of the national mall and most recently involvement in First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative.

ESP
>> ESP OUTDOOR IN REDDING, CALIFORNIA

When cyclists in Redding, California want to check out the latest rage in mountain bikes, they know where to go. ESP Outdoor has quickly become the "go-to" store for the 29er crowd.

Just six months ago, owner Garth Schmeck wouldn't have believed it himself but says that riding is believing. Although the bike shop is less than a year old, Schmeck has been in the industry for 25 years and has seen the mountain bike evolution through its share of fads. "At first I thought this might be a passing fancy, but podium finishes speak pretty loudly for the bikes," he says, referring in particular to finishes in the Nor Cal High School Mountain Bike League, for whom he coaches a team of ten riders. Eight of his ten riders are on 29ers and in one division alone, four of the top five season finishers raced on them.

By 2011 ESP's Mountain Bike stock will be 100% 29 inch wheels. "It's how we are establishing ourselves," he says noting that his store is also unique in its emphasis on cyclocross and high-end products for the discerning cyclist. Keeping his finger on the pulse of the industry makes all the difference and to that end, Schmeck and staff enter their share of races, support local cycling clubs, and offer free professional clinics for everything from bike fit to detailed repairs in order to build rider knowledge base and confidence. Through it all, the store establishes itself as the store in the know.

Custer Cyclery
>> CUSTER CYCLERY IN AUGUSTA, MI

Custer Cyclery was started in  2005 by myself (Daniel Stewart) after a 5 year stint as service manager at a large local shop. I want my shop to feature service as it's number one objective and offer quick turn arounds and emergency service for riders at Fort Custer Recreation area in SW Michigan.

What started out as a one man operation has grown more than 10 fold over the last 5 years and now features a full line of bikes from Giant and Niner. Niner came into the picture after our Giant Representative suggested that we check them out when I asked him about 29 inch mountain bikes which Giant did not manufacture. Upon looking into Niner we were amazed that no one in the area carried them and the quality of not only the product but the customer service they displayed. We ordered a few frames to test ourselves and after a few weeks riding these amazing bikes we were stoked to be able to start offering them to our customers. Just as the shop has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years our Niner sales have come to dominate our high end mountain bike sales. Niner was the best decision we have made as a business and we are proud to offer what we feel are the best 29 inch mountain bikes out there.

We also started a race team last year and it now features nearly 20 racers in all catagories with nearly 100% of them on the Niner Brand. We have found that what our race team rides is very important to our customers and really drives Niner sales for our shop. Our racers make their bikes available when anyone asks about them. We also have enrolled in the Niner Demo program and offer Demos from a Basic EMD build to a full blown SRAM XX Race Air9 for our potential customers to try out. We also make it a point when possible to ride with our customers on test rides so that we can answer any and all questions that may arise during the test session.  These sessions show our passion for not only riding but the Niner brand in particular. Niner has been the most important addition to the shop since we opened our doors in 2005 and we are positive that they will continue to grow sales with us and provide our customers with the finest products in the 29 inch MTB catagory, along with the best customer service in the industry!  Check our our website here
