>> STEEL, FOR THE DIRT CONNOISSEUR
|

|
Long revered by the serious riding public, a high quality steel frame is not something that should be overlooked even today. Many high tech materials have been added to the options for frame builders but the quality construction and fine riding feel of a steel frame is nothing to scoff at.
For many of us, mountain biking began aboard a steel frame. The ride you get out of a quality steel frame is snappy and comfortable. While other materials may dull the harshness of a trail, steel acts as a spring, returning energy as you rail through a corner with a liveliness you can't get anywhere else.
Niner offers two Reynolds 853 steel frames - the S.I.R. 9 and M.C.R. 9. Reynolds 853 is about a pound lighter than a comparable 4130 frame and only about three quarters of a pound heavier than the 7000 series aluminum found in our E.M.D. 9 frame, when comparing medium sizes. Pair the frame with one of our Reynolds steel forks and you will experience a zen-like connection to the trail that is eye-opening and heavenly.
Ride quality is just one of the factors that make the investment in a top notch 853 frame worthwhile. Steel has a durability that is impressive even when compared to more modern materials. The overall strength of Reynolds 853 steel is unmatched in all but their pricey 953 stainless tubing. No wonder many of the top end custom bike builders work exclusively in steel. Luckily, while custom frames come with a sky's the limit price range, Niner's steel bikes offer comparable quality at a fraction of the cost.
Curious what you are missing? Demo a steel Niner and join the ranks of the dirt connoisseurs.

We met a lot of great Niner riders, our Niner-Ergon race team gave their best efforts, we won an award and got in some great rides! Our favorite photographer (and amazing DH racer) Michael Darter was there to capture some great images!

>> GREEN IS MORE THAN A COLOR OR TREND
Niner Bikes is dedicated to doing our best around the office and in all of our business practices, by being as responsible as possible. Niner employee Mike Busch, has been placed in charge of company awareness and will be looking out for the little things we can do as well as some bigger goals we can all strive for at Niner. They might not always be things we can tout in the newsletter but they will be goals we will continue to shoot for as the company grows. Every little bit counts.

We have a great crew of people who work to bring Niner Bikes to the world, and as a part of expanding the Niner community, we thought we would start making some introductions:
Introducing Frank Orello.
His official title is Niner Warehouse/Shipping Manager, but you probably know him as the guy who makes sure that you get your Niner gear.
If you happen to be in the La Tuna Canyon/Verdugo area, you might spot Frank on a Kermit Green Air 9 or on his Tang R.I.P. 9 - you will probably find him admiring the views of Burbank and LA (just ask him to turn down the Ozzy if he doesn't hear you at first!)
When he isn't in SoCal, Frank looks for other great trails - his favorite trip so far included Tahoe's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, which he ranks as a high point in any off-road cyclist's resumé.
Frank's best tech tip is also his worst crash story: "Tire pressure needs
to be checked before you ride - this is how you avoid a Topanga Canyon blow-out at 45mph!

>> SEA OTTER SUCCESS ON A BORROWED NINER!
We
received a great letter from a new 29er convert, and wanted to share it
with everyone. Kris, thank you for your story, and congratulations on
your top-of-the-podium finish:
I'm a 44 year old woman racing Sport level for the last few years. I converted my geared Cannondale 26 hardtail into a single speed in January with the intention of using it as a training bike for the muddy months. I found riding a single speed to be a rather intense love/hate relationship and surprised even myself when I decided to try a few races on it! I felt uncertain about racing SS at Sea Otter Classic (I had raced Sport there in '08 & '09) so hesitated to sign up until the last week. I couldn't decide which gearing to go with so called one of the mechanics (Asa Salas) at the shop that I race for, Mad Cat Bicycles, and asked for advice. Asa offered to loan me a nice 19 cog that she had just in case I decided to not go with the 18 I was currently running. While at her house to pick up the cog we discussed the pros and cons of me running 18 or 19 at SOC and I jokingly pointed to her tricked out silver and pink One 9 hanging prominently off to the side and said, "...OR, I could just ride that?" And to my total astonishment Asa said, "You could do that." So, instead of putting a cog in my purse, I put a very tricked out 18 pound 29'er on the roof of my car and headed home with plans to switch out just the pink saddle (Asa and I are almost exactly the same size) and take the bike on my familiar 25 mile training ride first thing in the morning. So I met my teammate the next morning and off we went. It didn't take me long to notice that I was covering A LOT more ground and everything just felt altogether more efficient. Then we got to the first rock garden and I was BLOWN away! I was just rolling over things with such less effort. This is when the smiling started and it didn't stop for the rest of the ride (my teammate posted this on facebook). I was amazed at how much easier each and every obstacle and corner felt. We finished the 25 mile ride and as we rolled up, I said "Let's go do that again!" It wasn't in either of our training plans...so I headed home with a big smile on my face and looking very forward to my race in 5 days. Not only did people take pictures and ask questions about the bike (it's a beautiful show stopper) as I cruised around the venue, but I had riders comment on the bike as I passed them DURING the race!!! The best part was that I caught up to the lead SS Cat 2/3 gal right before the final section of climbs and had to give the "Shhhh" sign to a guy rider as I passed so as not to alert my competition to my presence. I ate a quick Gu and had a few big swigs on my bottle and took off with loads of confidence! Confidence that I never would of had on the 26 SS that was sitting saddle-less in my garage! The worst part of my story is that it is now Monday...and I have to give this totally awesome bike back! I am sold, converted, convinced, and shopping soon!

>> LIBERTY BICYCLES IN ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
Now in its 30th year, Liberty Bicycles has been a leader in bicycling in Western North Carolina and beyond. From its beginning in Mike and Claudia Nix's spare bedroom as a touring and commuting center, Liberty jumped wholeheartedly into mountain biking when the first reports from Marin County reached the East Coast. We promoted the first mountain bike race in WNC in 1980, at Bent Creek. Our first MTBs were Mongoose 26" BMX cruisers with a 5 speed derailleur added, and we have eagerly followed the innovations in cycling ever since, including the rise of the 29 inch wheel, which is beautifully suited to our Blue Ridge Mountain trails.
Liberty Bikes has grown into a national leader in bicycling advocacy and a strong supporter of the local cycling community. We sponsor major mountain and road bike events every year, and support our local touring, racing and mountain biking organizations. Our staff is active in all forms of cycling.
Check them out here.

>> TREAD IN CAMPBELL, CALIFORNIA
Tread was started by Shawn Siebe and Ford Young in the fall of 2008. We have set out to create a unique atmosphere for the hardcore and recreational cyclist alike. The main goal of the shop was to offer a clutter free and friendly shopping experience, complete with a bar (we serve the coldest beer in town) and a kids play area. The shop is built around the open Mechanics area to showcase some of the best wrenches in the Bay Area. We really focus on the higher end area of the sport, but support all facets of cycling. As a Niner dealer, we are able to offer a unique brand that has really set itself apart from the big box brands. The demand and loyalty behind Niner has created a shop following all itself, we have many customers that only ride Niner. Now that we have Niner demo bikes, we can spread the Niner love! See what we are about here.

Niner Bikes will always be dedicated to building hardcore 29 inch mountain bikes. We thank our loyal customers and dealers that make this passion a reality.
