2009 Day of Caring

Friday, September 25, 2009 marked United Way of Central Minnesota's (UWCM) eighteenth year of hosting its annual Day of Caring event.

Volunteers contributed more than 1,300 hours; an estimated value of $26,730. More than 330 volunteers from 32 area businesses completed 44 different projects for 22 different organizations.

Some highlights from the day include:
  • A local St. Cloud park shelter, Child Care Choices, YMCA, St. Cloud Hospital Gorecki House, Boys & Girls Clubs, Tri-CAP, New Beginnings, WACOSA, Lincoln Elementary School Library, and Whitney Senior Center Wood Shop all received fresh coats of paint.
  • Area food shelves were replenished thanks to several organizations that ran food drives within their organizations.
  • A number of places received help with fall cleaning, including: St. Cloud Children's Home, Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin Lakes and Pines, Quiet Oaks Hospice House, Munsinger Gardens, and Child Care Choices.

Over the past 18 years, it is estimated that 50,000 hours of volunteer time has been contributed to hundreds of local projects. Bernick's Beverages & Vending and Coborn's Inc. have sponsored the event since its inception.

This year marked the final Day of Caring but launched Days of Action. Days of Action promotes year-round volunteerism. UWCM is committed to engaging local businesses, groups and individuals in meaningful volunteer opportunities.

The sponsors for the event were Bernick's Beverages & Vending, Coborn's, Inc., HandsOn Network/Points of Light Foundation and UWCM. These companies made it possible for businesses to join with area nonprofits to make a difference in the lives of people in the community.

Live United Awards

Friday, September 25, 2009 United Way of Central Minnesota (UWCM) awarded its first Live United awards to two individual volunteers and two companies for their commitment and support of volunteerism.

Sandy VanTassell, Electrolux, and Chris Stanz, LarsonAllen, were presented with this year's individual "Live United" awards for their work with hunger and early childhood.

Sandy helped generate enthusiasm and passion for the issue of hunger by creating a structure for managing a massive food drive collection point, and planned and organized the rearranging of the Electrolux warehouse. Sandy's work helped raise more than 400,000 pounds of food and cash to support the effort.

Chris has given a significant gift of time to the Central Minnesota community through her passion for early childhood development. She served as a community investment volunteer, board member, board treasurer and Success By 6 chair for United Way all at the same time.

Honored for being champions of caring, creating a culture of giving and supporting volunteerism Bernick's Beverages & Vending and Coborn's, Inc. were awarded the organization Live United awards.

Campaign Highlight

World Color St. Cloud

World Color St. Cloud's theme was "Blanket our Community with Caring". Employees made blankets and purchased 200 pillows to be donated to the Salvation Army.  Before being donated, the pillows were used in a special campaign event pillow fight.  Thank you to World Color St. Cloud for putting up a fight for people in need in our community!
