"The off season" is the answer to many questions The Italian Concierge receives about Italy and neighboring countries. Whether your question is about when to get the best deal, or you are looking for suggestions on new and unique adventures, the answer is often "the off season."

Throughout Europe, the time between mid-November and mid-March is considered low season. During this time rates are often very appealing, making attainable hotels or even suites that are typically out of your price range. Availability is also easier during this period. This means that your first room choice is more likely available, or if you are looking for the most sought after hotels, you have a better possibility of getting in. Even in the busiest cities, like Rome, you could see 4 star hotels reduced by €100 per night as compared to their rates just weeks earlier. By taking advantage of the lower seasonal rates, this may also be the time to go for that view of the Grand Canal in Venice, the sea view on the Riviera, or a terrace that is out of reach in the summer. To keep the benefits coming, many partners of The Italian Concierge will add exciting amenities to attract your business.

Since the winter in much of Europe is milder than much of the U.S., this time of year should not be discounted for fear of the cold. Cities like Naples, Italy; Nice, France; Athens, Greece; and Grenada, Spain have average daily temperatures in the 50's through the winter.

Whether you are looking for a new adventure, once in a lifetime experiences, or just a special event that cannot be enjoyed in the summer, look no further. For the adventurer, the winter is a great time to hit the slopes for skiing, snowshoeing, etc., and can be done just a few hours from Venice, Milan, or Barcelona. The Italian Concierge knows amazing mountain resorts that provide luxurious spas and roaring fires to accompany the breathtaking views. Combining an exciting city with a winter wonderland retreat is easy in this part of the world!

If you are a foodie and have already enjoyed the worlds of wine and olive oil, the next seasonal harvest to explore is that of the black and white truffles. This tasty and sometimes elusive treat is considered a delicacy by most. Truffle season runs from late October through mid-December, depending on the region and truffle species. The Italian Concierge can help craft all or a portion of a holiday to include everything from truffle hunting, to cooking with truffles and dining on these delights.

One should also keep in mind that Europe has many fun and colorful festivals and events that take place outside the normal summer rush. The Italian Concierge can build a holiday around any event that has been on your wish list. Chief among the "off season" celebrations is Carnival. Parties and festivals marking Carnival take place throughout Europe in the gear up to Easter. Venice has arguably the most famous and unique of these celebrations. Carnival occurs in the week prior to Ash Wednesday. The week of Christmas and New Year also provides plenty of opportunity to be part of special, local events. Rome stands out as an exciting place to be for New Year's Eve, as the city is renowned for its fireworks spectacular.

The cultural calendar of Europe is rich with must-dos, and that continues to be true throughout the "off season." Music and arts festivals abound. Below is only a small list of events that may pique your interest and can easily be used as the cornerstone of an amazing holiday*:

  • Milan Jazz Fest - November
  • Siena, Festa di Santa Cecilia music festival - November
  • Orvieto Jazz Festival - December/January
  • Paris and Florence Fashion Weeks - January/February
  • Madrid - Contemporary art and flamenco festival - February

*Low season rates do not often apply during special events and festivals.

It is not too late to begin thinking about a fall/winter escape! If you like any of these ideas or need more, please get in touch. We are never more than a call or click away!

Thank you,
