Throughout Europe, the time between mid-November and mid-March is considered low season. During this time rates are often very appealing, making attainable hotels or even suites that are typically out of your price range. Availability is also easier during this period. This means that your first room choice is more likely available, or if you are looking for the most sought after hotels, you have a better possibility of getting in. Even in the busiest cities, like Rome, you could see 4 star hotels reduced by €100 per night as compared to their rates just weeks earlier. By taking advantage of the lower seasonal rates, this may also be the time to go for that view of the Grand Canal in Venice, the sea view on the Riviera, or a terrace that is out of reach in the summer. Since the winter in much of Europe is milder than much of the U.S., this time of year should not be discounted for fear of the cold. Cities like Naples, Italy; Nice, France; Athens, Greece; and Grenada, Spain have average daily temperatures in the 50's through the winter.
Whether you are looking for a new adventure, once in a lifetime experiences, or just a special event that cannot be enjoyed in the summer, look no further. For the adventurer, the winter is a great time to hit the slopes for skiing, snowshoeing, etc., and can be done just a few hours from Venice, Milan, or Barcelona. If you are a foodie and have already enjoyed the worlds of wine and olive oil, the next seasonal harvest to explore is that of the black and white truffles. This tasty and sometimes elusive treat is considered a delicacy by most. Truffle season runs from late October through mid-December, depending on the region and truffle species. One should also keep in mind that Europe has many fun and colorful festivals and events that take place outside the normal summer rush. Rome stands out as an exciting place to be for New Year's Eve, as the city is renowned for its fireworks spectacular.
