Highlights of the Week at UWFC - Please Welcome Our 3 AmeriCorp VIP Members To Our Team
|
In the next coming weeks we will introduce to you each of our AmeriCorps VIP (Volunteer Infrastructure Program) Members along with a bio written by them individually. First up for you to meet is Kao V. Xiong. Kao will be assisting in the forward movement of the Education Building Block.
My name is Kao Xiong. I graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz double majoring in Community Studies and Business Management Economics. I grew up in Tulare and knew very little about the problems that the Central Valley faced such as concentrated poverty to educational issues. Since my circle of interaction was so limited, I was blinded and did not realize all the issues that were affecting my community. To get reacquainted to some issues that the Central Valley faced, particularity in Fresno, I interned at Stone Soup Fresno for six months between June-December 2009. My time there changed my whole perspective of what I had believed change was. I created a Hmong male youth group called Brothers of Hmong Empowerment. There is a lack of Hmong male role models in my community, therefore my goal was to serve as that role model and give opportunities to the Hmong youth who were involved. I learned that change does not occur overnight, rather change is unpredictable. All I know is that I want to be part of that positive change in Fresno.
We are pleased to welcome Kao to our team and we our excited about the energy and positive thinking he brings with him.
Welcome to the United Way of Fresno County Team Kao Xiong!
