2-1-1 Celebrates 10 Years!
Not to be confused with 2-1-1 Fresno County which will celebrate its 3rd Birthday in December, 2-1-1 was officially approved for nation-wide use as a short number in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 20, 2000, 10 years ago. When a person calls 2-1-1, specailly trained "real people" answer the call and determine what services, information or resources are needed to help the caller. In 2009, 2-1-1 services in the United States answered more than 16.2 million calls. As of March 2010, 2-1-1 now reaches over 243 million Americans in all or part of 46 states, serving over 81% of the total US population, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
