The Local Board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) awarded nearly a million dollars in funds to Fresno County Community Based Organizations to provide meals, food pantry items, food vouchers, rent and mortgage assistance and other services for low income residents. Phase 28 funds were appropriated by Congress to expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around Fresno County. For 2010, nine agencies will receive a total of $971,523 to provide services.
The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP) is a Federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and has been entrusted through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (PL 100-77) "to supplement and expand ongoing efforts to provide shelter, food and supportive services" for the nation's hungry, homeless, and people in economic crisis.
