On Saturday, January 30, 2010 The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offering individuals and families with incomes less than $50,000 launched at Heald College in Fresno. This free tax preparation service is a program of United Way of Fresno County in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and community based organizations.
The program offers 30 VITA sites in Fresno and Tulare Counties that will be staffed by 280 volunteers who are IRS trained and certified tax preparers. Last year, volunteers completed and filed more than 4,700 tax returns generating over $4.79 million dollars in return to the local community.
This year individuals and families may be eligible for up to $5657 of additional tax return dollars through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). VITA volunteers ensure individuals and families claim all eligible tax credits to maximize their total refund.
You can access a complete list of VITA sites through United Way's website at www.unitedwayfresno.org or simply dial
2-1-1 and an information and referral service specialist will assist in finding a location nearest you.
