Welcome, Spring!
The coming of longer days, no matter where you are, means that Spring is here (or on its way!) and, more importantly, that a new season for Casting for Recovery retreats is upon us!
From our opening weekend in March in McEwen, Tennessee, to the season's close in November in Glen Rose, Texas, we're going to be serving over six hundred women across the United States with retreats this year--not to mention the reunions for former participants that so many volunteers organize! And this spring we're busy processing applications, gathering registration and medical data, preparing materials and equipment, and fielding questions from women who want to attend a Casting for Recovery retreat this season.
Although we added programs this year in New Mexico, the Adirondacks, Florida, and South Carolina, the need continues to grow. From December 1 through the first week of March over 750 women applied online to attend a retreat this season. Of those 58% were referred by their doctor, a medical facility, family members, or a support group...an indication of how CFR is valued in helping regain quality of life skills.
These online registrations, plus the emails, phone calls, and the "snail mail" registration forms we also receive, means that we're still faced with more demand than we can currently meet. As an example, 85 women in Arizona, versus 46 last year, and 114 women in Tennessee, versus 56 last year, have applied for a spot...and these are just examples of the widespread demand nationwide.
Especially during these economic times, we appreciate the generosity of all those who can help us continue to expand our services to the women and families who need the life-changing impact of CFR. We will meet the need by continuing to train and develop our volunteer base, and by working to sustain our programs across the country. Your help, at whatever level of support, can continue to make a difference--one woman at a time. Thank you.

In The News
You never know where the "Ripple Effect" will spread next!
Casting for Recovery will be one of the beneficiaries of royalties from "Hook, Line & Sinister," a collection of 16 original, never-before-published stories by bestselling authors who share an affection for fishing and a talent for writing mysteries! New York Times bestselling author T. Jefferson Parker is the editor, and Countryman Press of Woodstock, VT, a division of W.W. Norton, is the publisher. Scheduled for publication in April, the collection already has a positive review from Publishers Weekly and from noted fly-fishing author Nick Lyons, who said, "What a delicious brew of murder, mayhem, and piscatorial meanderings--spicy, varied, often witty, always entertaining!" A wide range of offerings from authors like Michael Connelly, Ridley Pearson, C.J. Box, Dana Stabanow, and Spring Warren are featured, and the book also includes a story from the late William Tapply.
Lori Simon, Executive Director of Casting for Recovery, says "It's no mystery why Hook, Line & Sinister will help make a difference! Every day more than 500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Increasing our ability to support women with the physical and emotional healing our retreats provide will also benefit their families and their communities--it's what we call the 'Ripple Effect' in action! We're so very grateful to the authors involved, and to T. Jefferson Parker and Countryman Press, for initiating this wonderful project."
Brookdale Senior Living - West Division has joined in a service partnership to help support Casting for Recovery's national programs for breast cancer survivors. Clare Bridge of Lynnwood, a Brookdale Senior Living community in Washington state, kicked off the partnership by conducting a raffle in early March to raise funds to support our efforts to serve women at any age or stage of treatment or recovery from breast cancer. One of the most unique items was a pink electric guitar, shown here.
