National Office News
A Note From Lori Simon
I'm very happy to share some important news with our volunteer leaders. We have secured commitments from two generous companies that will positively affect our ability to continue to sustain our services, and to grow to serve more women.
Brookdale Senior Living - West Division has identified Casting for Recovery as an organization closely aligned with their own mission to enrich lives "with compassion, respect, excellence and integrity" and they have decided to pledge a significant amount in 2010 in support of building CFR's capacity to serve more women.
Thanks to an initial introduction to CFR made by Peg Miskin, Volunteer Program Coordinator for Northern California and a member of the Volunteer Leadership Council, Brookdale's management team was intrigued about how we were making a difference in the lives of women. Following an inspirational presentation by Peg to regional managers, Fara Gold, the Vice President of Field Sales and Marketing for the West Division - Brookdale Senior Living traveled to Manchester to learn more about our mission and CFR's strategic goals. In a recent phone meeting with the management team we discussed the roll-out of information and events in 2010 that will engage not only this division of Brookdale employees in raising funds to support CFR, but also their residents and families. Kudos to Peg, who saw the "big picture" positive impact that this relationship could have on all the women who need CFR! The ripples spread!
We're also pleased to announce that not only has The Hartford continued their support of CFR nationally this year, they've also renewed their commitment for 2010. Next year, The Hartford's 200th anniversary year, will mark the fifth year of The Hartford's support of CFR, which began in 2006. The Hartford's Ability Philosophy, demonstrated through its philanthropic activities, has been of enormous assistance as we've expanded volunteer training and our organizational capacity.Training on Fundraising Plans & Special Events In response to a need identified from the field, the National Office hosted two webinars titled "Building a Fundraising Plan and Special Event Budget". This was a first time event for many, including yours truly as a webinar host, and while technology can be challenging, this is an effective training tool when so many of our volunteers are separated by distance. If you'd like to view the first session, with all its hiccups, let me know.
As we move forward into the budgeting process we will hold webinars on November 12 at 9:00 pm EST and November 16 at 12:00 noon EST. Invitations will be sent to all program coordinators soon. If there is someone on your planning team to whom an invitation should be sent, please email me at lori.simon@castingforrecovery.org.
Alert: Another Online Auction Opportunity!
Thanks to a renewed commitment from the donor who provided trips to benefit the Alaska program for our first-ever online auction, we'll be featuring another online auction starting after Thanksgiving and running through the end of the year. If you have received a donation, or the offer of a donation, of an item that your team feels would benefit by exposure to a national audience, please email the details to us before November 12th. As mentioned in the August memo, the proceeds of the item submitted by a program to the auction will be allocated 60% to the program, and 40% to the general fund. The result of the August auction was very successful, especially for the Alaska team- thus precipitating this second offer and a chance to benefit more programs.
CFR Teams to Get a Fundraising Lift with "Rise" Last memo we talked about a fundraising opportunity tied in with a new fly-fishing film. The debut of Confluence Films and Yellow Dog FlyFishing Adventures production of Rise is now on schedule with many CFR teams! (Take a peek-- click on the film tab in the upper left of their website; then click on Rise trailer.)
So far we have the following locations scheduled:
- Alaska
- Montana
- Oregon (4 locations)
- Texas
- Syracuse, NY
- Vermont

Volunteer & Volunteer Leadership Council News
Volunteer Program Coordinator Bios (continued)
Debbie Hampton (Ohio) is proud to be a member of the Buckeye United Fly Fishers (BUFF). BUFF adopted the CFR program as a club project thanks to Debbie, who initiated the relationship as a non-fly fishing club member. Many members of the club are involved in fundraising events, as River Helpers, and in outreach into the community. Debbie has a background in events planning and makes her home in Liberty Township.
Lorry Perkins (western PA) attended a CFR program in 2002 at the suggestion of Cecelia Hard, a volunteer Medical Facilitator. At the retreat she met Beth Gazda, and the dynamic volunteer trio hosted the first Western PA program at Nemacolin Woodlands this year after a successful round of fundraising events. Lorry is Director of Corporate Relations at the Pittsburgh Mercy Foundation and raises funds for the unsheltered homeless and children who have been victims of abuse.

Regional & Retreat News & Events The Great Bay Trout Unlimited Chapter once again hosted a fishing day for past participants in New England's Casting for Recovery retreats. This TU Chapter, which has sponsored a day's outing for the sixth year in a row, is only one of the many Chapters nationwide who support Casting for Recovery. Kudos to all our TU friends!
The Ripple Effect of CFR: you never know when it's going to strike! Kerri Russell, Volunteer Program Coordinator of the Arkansas team, received phenomenal news that Kroger Corp. was sending a significant contribution to the Arkansas program--all as a result of a recommendation by an employee who was a participant in a CFR retreat, and who is now a CFR volunteer. Thanks to alumna Sharon Kaye Templeman for her story in the "Giving Hope a Hand" project, where a special group of Kroger associates who have faced breast cancer are bravely sharing their stories of survival - to offer encouragement and hope to others dealing with the disease.
On one of the wettest Saturdays of October the Mid-Atlantic program hosted a "2-Fly 4 Hope" Tournament in Madison, VA that was, in Volunteer Program Coordinator Meg Konkel's words, "wild and wet and a great success!" Despite 35 mile/hour wind gusts and a 45 minute rotating schedule of wind, rain and sun, a total of 10 teams participated, "oodles" of raffle items were featured, and the end result was raising $6,000 net after expenses! Long-time volunteer Kiki Galvin ran the show on the fishing side, and in spite of the weather Meg reports that everyone had a really nice time, and left feeling enthusiastic about repeating the event next year.
A list of the many events that CFR volunteers are involved in is available on the website events page. To find out more about what's going on with teams around the country, visit the Volunteer News.
