What Can You Do?
As many of you know, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness month. It's generally recognized that during the past twenty-five years there's been great progress in issues surrounding breast health, treatment, and recovery. Yet there still remains a great deal to be done - especially in the important part of recovery that surrounds the issue of survivorship.
Our goal, to be the preeminent breast cancer survivor support organization, is of critical importance. Fly-fishing may appear to be the topic of the day, but helping survivors is the underlying focus of all we do. Seven out of ten women who apply for a Casting for Recovery
retreat do not belong to a support group, and often lack access to the resources that would help them address
the issues they face during treatment and recovery. By assisting women to address the medical and emotional issues they experience at home and in their workplace, Casting for Recovery helps our participants build a focus on wellness instead of illness, on empowerment as opposed to helplessness. The positive ripples from the experience of the Casting for Recovery program extend beyond the women we serve to their families, their workplaces, and their communities. What can you do this month to make a difference? While we served more women than ever in 2009, we still turn away more than three times the number that apply. We must do more and that is where we need your help.
The healing ripples of Casting for Recovery can only spread with support from you. That is why, during this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we'd like to ask your continued contribution towards the work that we're doing. By helping us meet the growing demand for
our program, you'll be helping make a difference in people's lives - one woman at a time. Please visit our website to make a secure online donation or to volunteer to help.

Regional Reports --------------------------------------------------------------------
The Casting for Recovery Alaska volunteer team is making waves in Anchorage this October with "Foundations for Recovery," a wild collection of artistically interpreted bras created by 22 artists to help raise awareness of the Casting for Recovery program for breast cancer survivors. The month-long outreach and silent auction event kicks off in early October at an Anchorage midtown gallery, and after the opening the individual pieces will "parade" around town to various other venues. All auction proceeds will benefit Casting for Recovery's program in Alaska, which is the second longest running program in the nation, having completed its 13th retreat last summer. All of the creations are metaphors for healing and while some of the "wild bras" have fish or fly-fishing themes, artists have interpreted the concept of recovery in many ways. Titles of the pieces range from "For Lelani" and "Dear Judy, I have some news" to "Yo Yo Ma...Ma" and "Alaska Woman's Training Bra" (complete with wheels--see image at left). Check out the event's Facebook page for more info! Casting for Recovery Northern California alumna and volunteer Susan Dotto has been recognized by Cleavage Creek Cellars, a winemaker that donates 10% of their gross proceeds to breast cancer treatment and support, as one of the six "2009 Women of Cleavage Creek". Budge Brown honors his wife's battle with breast cancer through the sale of six wines produced in the Napa Valley winery he owns and operates. "When people learn about Cleavage Creek and the motivation behind it, well, if it reminds one person to go for a checkup, do a self-examination, or become more informed, we're accomplishing my goal of saving lives."
The Casting for Recovery Northern New Jersey volunteer team proves that the ripple effect spreads across sports! The team is thrilled to report that not only was CFR once again selected as a "charity of choice" by Goals for Life, a great group that conducts an annual women's soccer tourney and donates the funds to different women's health initiatives that work directly in the community, but that due to the economy, Goals for Life decided to select four - rather than one or two not-for-profits to try to help more organizations meet their goals. CFR was one of the four chosen for this year's tournament proceeds, and the good news is that the tournament donation matched last year's contribution! Last year's Goals for Life commitment to CFR was critical in establishing this year's new South Jersey retreat...we are very grateful to the GFL board for their gift.
