National Office News

A Note From Lori Simon
Kate and I just returned from the recent Fly Fishing Retailer show held in Denver, CO where I had the opportunity to meet many of our supporters in the fly-fishing community, including Rick and Ginny Pope of Temple Fork Outfitters
(TFO). (As many of you know, TFO has been of immense support in helping us establish new retreats through their rod sales program, which has provided over $40,000 to CFR since it began in 2007.) I also had the chance to meet CFR volunteers Donna and Jim Teeny, who also support CFR through their company; and the wonderful folks at Dr. Slick, Rio Products, and Ross Reels, who have provided in-kind donations to our efforts, and also met with Lily Renzetti, the Volunteer Program Coordinator of our upcoming Florida retreat.

I was impressed by the number of River Helpers from various fly shops and TU groups who also stopped by to attest to how much their volunteering meant to them. Members of CFR's Colorado team Kris Tita, Dana Rikimaru, Ron Crews, an
FlyFishingRetailer2009d Kathy Kanda also deserve a round of applause for stepping in to help at the booth - space for which was donated by the generous folks with AFFTA and the Nielsen show management. (Kate at CFR booth at right.)

What struck me about the fly-fishing business world is how truly boundary-free it is. Whether selling rods for fishing for redfish off the Texas coast or salmon in the rivers of Alaska, everyone is concerned about the health of the fisheries and the sport, and in bringing new "converts" into the community.  It's a good lesson for us all that it's not just about any one retreat--our business is to be advocates for women and for breast cancer survivor support. And just as the fly-fishing industry is seeking to broaden its reach, we must constantly reach outwards to engage supporters beyond our own world.

Fundraising Opportunity

At the Denver show I had the opportunity to meet with Jim Klug of Confluence Films and Yellow Dog FlyFishing Adventures.  In 2008 he and his team produced the fly-fishing movie Drift and are following up that acclaimed production in 2009 with the film Rise.  We were privy to the trailer for the film and it looks awesome...if any of you are skiers and are familiar with the Warren Miller movies, this was filmed by one of the Miller cinematographers and the photography is incredible. It's real "trout candy" and is the kind of thing that helps keep avid fly fishers dreaming through the onset of the colder months until the season opens again! (Take a peek-- click on the film tab in the upper left of their website; then click on Rise trailer.)

Here is where you come in. They have offered Casting for Recovery the chance to host premieres of the movie in various cities and all of you came to mind.  It is a simple process of finding a movie theater to donate--or highly discount--a theater slot (the venue should seat up to 200-300 people) and your team would sell tickets for $10-$12 apiece (if you want to go big time, get some wine and food donated and charge $25). Confluence is charging CFR around $200 for the license fee for each showing.  If you are able to attract one hundred people to the "premier", and cut a deal with your local movie theatre for a free night (or get a donor to cover the cost) your program budget could net $1,300! You would also utilize your fly-fishing connections (TU chapters, FFF clubs, fly shops, etc.) to promote the event.
For those that want to get a head start on 2010 fundraising, or are facing a shortfall this year, this may be a great way to do a neat event and reach your goals. Please email me immediately if you're interested!

Volunteer Program Coordinator Bios (continued)

In Memoriam...

Judy McCann (Michigan)Judith McCann
It is with deep sadness that we announce the Sept. 16 death of Judy, who for many years has served as the lead instructor and Volunteer Program Coordinator with the CFR-Michigan program.  She had been employed as a Cytotechnologist working for the Saginaw Hospitals and later owned and operated the fly-fishing company Fly-Rite, Inc. She was a member of Trout Unlimited and had served on the Board of Directors. Our deepest sympathies are extended to her sons David, Michael, and Christopher, and to her entire family and many friends. We will miss her.

To direct prospective participants to the online application, have them click on "Retreats" at the top of the Home Page.  In the descriptive text of the Retreats page is a link "Apply for A Retreat". The option still exists for emailing or faxing applications, but we would ENCOURAGE everyone to use this new tool as it will help us be more efficient!

Prospective volunteers can sign up by going to the "Support" Page, clicking the "Volunteering" link, and then can take advantage of either the online application or the downloaded printed form.
