For                  Late Summer 2009
Letter from the Chairman, Board of Trustees

It is good every now and then to look back and remember why it is we do what we do.  Earlier this month the Board of Trustees did just that in our quarterly meeting, and we reaffirmed our commitment to CFR's core mission: to educate and support breast cancer survivors.

It's easy in the midst of planning a retreat to get caught up in waders and fly lines, and lose sight of what we really do.  We give hope.  We give strength.  We give of ourselves.  And by the way, we introduce our participants to a therapeutic sport.

Think about the comments you get after a retreat.  What do they talk about?  They talk about the power of healing.  They talk about being among women who understand.  They talk about hope.  And sometimes, they mention fishing.

As we look forward to a new season of retreats and all the planning and work that entails, take a few minutes to remember why you do this.  You do it to educate and support breast cancer survivors.  The rest of it is just details.

Bless you for the work you do.

Thomas Hayes, Esq., Chair, CFR Board of Trustees

The Trout Unlimited 50th Anniversary Celebration in L.Simon-C.GauvinTraverse City, MI was also the occasion for a celebration of 13 years of TU volunteer and financial support of the Casting for Recovery program. CFR was invited to be a part of the program and deliver a presentation to assembled Chapter and Council presidents on the power of volunteering and noting the record of TU volunteer support in service of CFR "human conservation" efforts. The CFR program not only benefits from the grassroots support provided by chapters and members, but helps TU's message of conservation to spread  into new communities.  Lori Simon, Executive Director of Casting for Recovery, shown here presenting a commemorative print of a Trout Mandala by artist Mimi Matsuda to Charles Gauvi
Mandalan, President of TU, noted during the presentation that the mandala reflects the circle of volunteers, participants, and donors that power the Casting for Recovery program and signifies the pursuit of wholeness that the Casting for Recovery experience encourages in participants.
