National Office News
A Note From Lori Simon At this time of year with the retreats underway and women all over the country experiencing the benefits of CFR it's a good time to stop and reflect on the generosity of all who help Casting for Recovery's mission. We cannot value highly enough the support our donors give us, and I know that you agree with me that we should recognize this generosity every occasion we can. Whether contributing treasures, talent, or time, all who support CFR are deserving of gratitude and respect.
As part of "stewardship" of our many individual, organizational, and company donors, I thought it would be interesting to share with all of you - and encourage you to share with other members of your teams - a document that was developed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the American Association of Fundraising Counsel, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education: The Donor Bill of Rights.
The text follows, and we also have it posted on the Volunteer Bulletin Board for download:
Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:
I. To be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
III. To have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.
IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
IX. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
Online Auction Report
The first-ever online auction ended on August 1, and it was a great success! This test of new technology was driven by a very generous contribution from Mike Everett of Iowa Pacific Processors, who funded an all expenses paid trip for six, during the third week of September, to the Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge. His intent was that both the Alaska program and CFR's general fund would benefit from this donation. In a little more than a month, using a national online auction service, we sent out a total of over 25,000 email messages about the auction to our email list, and were also chosen as one of their "featured" auctions. The winning bidders got a great travel bargain - and CFR netted just over $10,000.
And although this wasn't an auction with a long list of items offered, the success of this test means that we can do it again: we'd like to plan for a combined auction in October for teams who wish to participate.
If you have been approached by donors who are offering trips, or other items, and if you've felt you don't have a venue to "do them justice" - this would be the perfect opportunity. The costs of the service, the auction fees, and the management by the Home Office would be covered by 40% of the winning bid - while the program would get 60%.
The sooner we begin planning this the better: please email Kate if you have any questions, or if this is of interest to your teams!

Volunteer & Volunteer Leadership Council News
Volunteer Program Coordinator Bios (continued)
Gerri Rescigno and Jackie Bradley (South Jersey) are 2003 CFR alumnae and are Co-Coordinators of the new 2009 Southern NJ program, whose first retreat is scheduled for October.
Jackie and her husband of 37 years live in Eldora, NJ, and have two married daughters. Not only does she love her job as a confidential secretary at a small school near the beach, she enjoys sewing, reading and writing and belongs to the Barrier Island Writers, a writing group that has recently published their first book. Jackie notes "The CFR retreat had such an impact on my perspective that I want to repay the gift. I want as many women as possible to have this experience."
Gerri has stressed that she had such a wonderful experience at the 2003 retreat she wanted to start a South Jersey Retreat. A seven-year survivor, Gerri lives with her husband and two sons in South Jersey and works as a Realtor in Sea Isle City on the New Jersey Shore. Gerri and Jackie are are delighted to be "giving back" to as many women as possible who will share the unique experience they enjoyed as participants.
Kim Rasmussen (Minnesota/Wisconsin) is the Volunteer Program Coordinator and Retreat Leader for the new MN/WI program. Kim is the Director, Product Service Implementation Team, Hartford Life Division Global Operations and Technology, and she heads up a volunteer team anchored by The Hartford employees. They raised just over $38,000 for the MN/WI program through raffles, bake sales, casual day stickers and other events. The team also engaged the generosity of Trout Unlimited chapters, who not only donated flies and reels, but who attended four different Twin Cities-area Hartford Employee fund raisers. Kim notes she was lucky enough to attend the 2008 Missouri retreat as a trainee.
Volunteer Leadership Council The Volunteer Leadership Council convened with Executive Director Lori Simon in Big Timber, MT, the third week in July for a dynamic retreat, filled with plenty of give-and-take and a focus on long-term goals; look for an update soon.
