Nirmada Causes
This month we were fortunate enough to be a part of the Thorn Tree Project's annual fundraiser held at Clodagh.
ABOUT THE CAUSE
Jane Newman was introduced to the nomadic Samburu tribe of Northern
Kenya when the Land Rover she was in broke down. She stayed with them
until the car was fixed and was won over by their kindness and
generosity. The tribe had two primary schools that were ill equipped
and poorly attended but it was their dream to get more of their
children attending school. Through her work with the tribe and the
establishment of the Sereolipi Nomadic Education Foundation,
the number of children has gone from 132 in 2001 to over a thousand in
2008. This benefit goes directly to the education of the Samburu
children - there is NO OVERHEAD that comes out of your donations.

As the weather gets warmer here in New York, my thoughts turn to green market produce, summer salads, and....what's working and what's not in my New York City kitchen! Although there has been a slight decline in high-end Kitchen work in our firm, we're using this time as an opportunity to help our clients realize a quantifiable return on their investment by implementing some sustainable strategies in their kitchen designs. Also, as many of our clients have been postponing or pulling back on major projects, we've found that improving your current environment, rather than purchasing that new apartment can really make a big difference in your quality of life. Please see our 5 Green Tips on Kitchen Design below for hints you can use for creating your own Green environment -creating beautiful spaces that function for your lifestyle and also save you money and time. |
Nirmada's 5 Sustainable
Kitchen Design Tips
2. The use of Greenguard Certified, antimicrobial, stain resistant solid surfacing materials for countertops and backsplashes, such as products from Silestone and Caesarstone. These surfaces provide definitive value to the Homeowner, as they are low maintenance and safe for families. They also come with Lifetime warrantees and will never have to be replaced, contributing to resale value of the home, and lifecycle cost reduction for the project.
3. Using sustainable flooring solutions such as cork, provide an easy to maintain, quiet environment, that's healthy as well. Cork flooring is sustainable, as it's made from rapidly renewable resources. Cork absorbs sound, is water and stain resistant, and is soft and ergonomic underfoot. It also is helpful when you drop a glass or plate to cushion the blow!
4. The use of FSC Certified wood, and urea-formaldehyde particle board for Kitchen Cabinets. Once we educate our clients on the dangers of VOC's, off-gassing, etc. they are usually willing to spend the extra money to use products which create a safe environment for their family. Lately we've even used an acrylic-based lacquer, which provides a glossy modern finish, with no harmful smells or off gassing! 5. By using new LED lighting in Kitchens, we can offer beautiful light that is more efficient and longer lasting than both incandescents and CFLs, and contain NO TOXIC MERCURY.
