One in Five Rhode Island Children Live in Poverty

According to new data that Rhode Island KIDS COUNT released from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, 47,000 (21.9%) children in Rhode Island lived in poverty in 2011. Rhode Island ranked 6th in New England and 27th in the country (where 1st is best). State-by-state estimates of child poverty are also available. |

Rhode Island KIDS COUNT recently held annual Data in Your Backyard events in Woonsocket and Newport. Each event featured a community-specific data presentation followed by a discussion. Co-sponsored by Connecting for Children and Families, the Woonsocket event took place at the Chaplin-Perez Community Center on Thursday, September 20, 2012. Number of Insured Children in Rhode Island Increased, Despite Continued High Unemployment

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey (CPS) released by Rhode Island KIDS COUNT shows that 94.1% of Rhode Island's children had health insurance between 2009-2011. Rhode Island now ranks 10th best in the nation for children's health insurance coverage, up from 13th last year.

Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Welcomes a New Policy Analyst

Rhode Island KIDS COUNT is pleased to welcome Jim Beasley to our team. Jim will cover policy analysis, research, and writing on a wide array of children's health issues, including children's health insurance coverage, oral health, behavioral health, and a variety of other health topics.
Previously, Jim was a Secretary Fellow in the Office of Communication at the U.S. Department of the Interior and a Data Specialist at Dynamic Logic in Warwick, RI. During his graduate studies he provided research assistance to Villanova's Office of Planning and Institutional Research. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Masters in Public Administration from Villanova University.
