From the Executive Director

Dear Chamber Members,

As we enter the last full month of summer (can you believe it?!), my message is a simple one.

 SHOP KENT COUNTY FIRST!

It is important to do business with your fellow Chamber Members. Say you need some office supplies; well we have Chamber members that sell office supplies. What about new furniture, home or office?  We have Chamber members that sell that also.

When you do business with fellow Chamber members, you are supporting businesses that are supporting this community and region by supporting the Kent County Chamber of Commerce. Need an Attorney, CPA, Realtor, Dentist, Physician, Veterinarian; all of these are also our members.

You can find these businesses listed in the Chamber Business Directory and on our website at www.kentchamber.org.  Do you need a little therapy, either physical or mental?  Well, we also have members in these fields.

I hope you see the message we are trying to send. When you do business with your fellow Chamber members, the ripple effect helps our members and our community. You can also check the list of participating members in the Member-to-Member Benefit Program at the end of this Newsletter.  These members offer discounts to all fellow Chamber members.

Thanks for being a member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce, we appreciate your support!

ANNOUNCING A COMMUNITY-WIDE

POSTER MAKING EVENT!

Bullying Hurts

"BULLYING - KNOWLEDGE MEANS STRENGTH"

East West Martial Arts is sponsoring a community-wide Poster Making Event for Chestertown and its surrounding areas in an effort to educate our children on the subject of Bullying. Our goal is to help educate as many children as possible in our martial arts school as well as in the community, by giving them the tools they need to stand up for themselves, and others.  One of the ways children can express their feeling is through the arts.

A few weeks ago East West Martial Arts asked all their students to make a poster on the subject of Bullying.  Many of our students joined in the fun and the ones we have so far are really great.

This has opened the door to a flood of questions - and answers!  It has lead to role-playing exercises, identifying what bullying is, how can we determine if we are bullying (i.e.: through manipulation) as well as ways to diffuse a bullying situation.

Our students' responses have shown us this is a way to help all children learn how to handle bullying situations.  Therefore, East West Martial Arts is sharing with the community our Poster Making Event in order to help not only our students, but all children in the Chestertown and surrounding areas.

The best posters will be on public display details to follow.  Five posters will be chosen (from a group of non-partial judges) as the winners and the winners will each receive a trophy.  We will take the top 5 and make banners out of them to be used in our bullying seminars.  We sincerely hope you will join in "the fun" of helping our children handle bullying.  Please call East West Martial Arts at (410) 810-8808 for more information.

Themes:

  • What a bully looks like,
  • What a victim looks like,
  • What we can do to help,
  • Types of bullying, etc.

Medium:

Your choice paint, charcoal, marker, pencil, pictures, photographs etc.

Submit your posters on 28x22 colored or white poster board

Name address and phone must be on back of your poster.

The deadline to drop posters off at East West Martial Arts is August 17th, 2011.

Marylanders Encouraged to Attend Statewide

'Cycle Maryland' Events

Then Submit Photos to Enter Contest

Governor Martin O'Malley recently unveiled the 'Cycle Maryland' initiative as a way to showcase the many benefits of recreational cycling in Maryland. O'Malley encouraged Marylanders to attend 'Cycle Maryland' events now through October 9, 2011.

"The selected events for 'Cycle Maryland' showcase Maryland's cycling diversity from family-friendly recreational rides on newly opened rail trails to highly competitive long-distance road races, these routes take visitors on an up-close and personal journey through some of the most scenic landscapes in Maryland."

In addition to the June 18th kick-off on the Cross Island Trail in Queen Anne's County, four 'Cycle Maryland' events are still in the offing.

·    August 13, 2011 - Ride to See: A Bicycle Tour of Kent County begins at 6am and offers four routes ranging between 15 and 100 miles in length. Riders will pass through historic villages and picturesque countryside along the Chesapeake Country National Scenic Byway. Registration fees benefit the Galena Lions Charities.

·    September 17, 2011 - Saint Mary's Century, previously known as the Southern Maryland Amish 100, offers a traditional 100 mile, 65 mile or 35 mile course over a flat to rolling hills terrain. Rest stops incorporate historic attractions such as Historic St. Mary's City, Maryland's first settlement, and St. George's Island, a tiny sliver of land that the British used as a base during the War of 1812 from which to raid local shipyards and river plantations.

·     October 1, 2011 - Anacostia Trail Opening, this Bladensburg event opens the two-mile missing trail link from Bladensburg's Waterfront Park to the Maryland /District of Columbia line thus joining the park to the trail network along the Anacostia River Tributary System. This Chesapeake Bay Gateways  Network site was once a thriving Colonial port and later played a pivotal role in the War of 1812.

·    October 9, 2011 - Tour du Port, a fully-supported tour ranging from 12 miles to a metric century (63 miles) in length, begins at Baltimore's Canton Waterfront Park and winds through twelve of Baltimore's historic neighborhoods, waterfront areas and beautiful city parks. Riders will traverse streets where, 150 years ago, Civil War soldiers marched.

Additional information on the 'Cycle Maryland' initiative may be accessed at www.cycle.maryland.gov
