Accents Anniversary: 23 Years on Main Street
As our 24th year on Main Street quickly approaches, I have been thinking back on the incredible journey that has led up to Accents being the wonderful artist community that it is. The journey began when I moved to Venice, right after high school, to surf and make art. Living in Venice and taking art classes at Santa Monica College, I met many amazing artists in the area.
My interest in sculpting led to an apprenticeship with a jeweler, where I learned stone cutting and wax carving. I fell in love with creating jewelry through the art of miniature sculpture. As I was preparing to sell my jewelry, I discovered there was no outlet for local artists, such as myself, to present their work. I opened an art gallery on Abbott Kinney representing some well known Venice artists as well as a few of my teachers at SMC.
I started thinking about how great it would be to have a group of designers in a retail/workshop environment, where each individual designer could express their own creativity, together creating a diverse collection of contemporary jewelry. Accents Jewelry Design opened 23 years today and has since evolved into what I imagined over 30 years ago.
